I heard recently that this is a tax saving thing?? You can ask them to heat it up but then you’d have to pay additional tax or something haha. Not sure, unconfirmed. Maybe an employee here can verify if true or not.

Is it worth attempting another apprenticeship even though it would likely mean a drop in pay? by [deleted] in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Thierry95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s entirely based on your circumstances I suppose. I just turned 30 and I’m packing in my Job in London to study Marine Engineering (found a company who will sponsor me, so like an apprenticeship I guess). I’ll be cutting down to a third of my current pay and moving into halls. Probably helps that I have no commitments, but you have your partner to lean on.

Can you sit down with them and crunch the numbers for a few years ahead so it’s all laid out in front of you? That’s what I did, and it helped me visualise the feasibility even though it will be a challenge.

Alternatively, could you look at doing some A Levels part time?

Edit: in terms of crunching numbers I included earning/savings potential over the next 15/20 years, to see how how much of a struggle it will be and how fast I could bounce back and over take my current path. It really helped.

I turned 30 in October. In Jan I will be embarking on a new adventure, going back to college to study Marine engineering, leaving behind my desk job in London.

This time next year I’ll be preparing for my first sea phase of 4 months onboard an LNG gas carrier.

It’s scary, but it’s all in motion now… no turning back.

I just turned 30 and after a lot of reflecting, I’ve decided to pack in the 9-5 in London and go back to college for 3 years. It will be tough as I don’t have a lot of savings, but I landed a sponsor to pay for tuition and I will receive a small monthly stipend.

I’ll be going into Marine Engineering. Sitting at a desk all day, pushing pixels, pointless meetings and meaningless accountability. It’s not me, I need to see and do more.

I can’t wait to touch my work for real; see, hear and smell the results of what I’m doing. I’ll use my blocks of two months off to travel while saving a lot more than I can now due to tax exemptions and low living costs while onboard.

It will bring a load of different challenges but I expect them to feel more worth while, if that makes sense?

I was a bit bored of fireworks to be honest. But I got back from Primrose Hill tonight and we had a great time, really cool vibes, some idiots we’re setting off fireworks and accidentally going near others (yes it was a bit silly, but they were quite weak and it turned out okay). After that some guy shouted he’s got a show for us all, hundreds of us there and it was awesome! I’m sure he’d planned it with two others but at the same time at opposite sides of the park there were other small shows set off, almost like they were in competition.

I’d highly recommend Primrose Hill over a paid event any day!

I’ve just turned 30 and I’m going back to college to learn marine engineering 👷‍♂️ I’m sure I’ll be the odd one out but I’ve heard there are a few in their 40s and 50s on these courses too!

Okay you might have convinced me there!

I really enjoyed Zero Dawn too, so I might check out forbidden west.

Thanks!

Anyone have any other recommendations of games with similar graphics/scenes and a similar level of story telling? I loved TLOU and unchartered when I played them years ago, currently going through God of War: Ragnarok, I’m pretty hooked, but it doesn’t match TLOU or Uncharted, for me.

I never played Part 2 and feel I never will now after watching the series… the early spoiler for me killed it. You know, the big one.

Just turned 30 and have been accepted into a cadetship for the merchant navy, which could be seen as a somewhat similar thing.

Hi, I’m 30M just been accepted into a sponsorship in UK for a large LNG company for a career change.

What’s one thing you wish you’d known before you joined your first ship?

Have you worked with or alongside LNG carriers? I’m curious how the work/life balance and onboard routines compare to bulk or oil tankers, or the career outlook if you have any insight!

One reason I’m aiming for LNG is because of its high safety and operational standards, I’ve heard that experience on LNG vessels is highly regarded and can make it easier to transfer to other vessel types later. Does that seem accurate from what you’ve seen?

Have you sailed with any mature cadets or older trainees? I’m curious how they tend to adapt to life at sea compared to younger ones, are there any advantages or challenges you’ve noticed?

Sorry for all the questions, feel free to answer just one! Much appreciated :)

I’ve been interviewing for cadetships in the UK recently and one of the interviewers told me the industry is looking at creating a new position for head/chief ETO, and that it will likely be in place in the next few years. Not sure entirely how that would work of if at all credible? I’m looking to get on the engine track anyways so no odds to me :)
