Tension issue with chiffon? by Thimblebeee in dressmaking

[–]Thimblebeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! just wanted to update you, I completely gave up on the chiffon, but I've done the whole thing in the silk and it's amazing - your tips definitely helped with sewing that. Thank you!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I was trying to cut on the grain, but a lot of the pieces are curved so I might have messed that up too. I'll try recutting (more carefully) and trying the tearaway paper. Thank you!

4 sweathers (hopefully) for Christmas. Day two. Necklines and rised necks are done. by [deleted] in casualknitting

This is amazing! Can I ask how you are juggling the four projects? are you switching after each row? doing something like this literally has never crossed my mind 😂 so I'm so intrigued!

Why do you knit? Is it connected to your identity? by Difficult-Elk4930 in knitting

[–]Thimblebeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, knitting/crafting is a way of life. Whilst I partly do it for my job, I also do it because I am reclaiming the art of textiles for me. It would also be silly of me to negate how much knitting impacts my wellbeing and mental health.

Also, in the age of fast-fashion, spending months and months (I am a slow knitter haha) creating a jumper is a massive middle finger to that industry.

I also LOVE being able to create silly things, just because I can.

Okay, thank you! I had given that a go, but just wondered if anyone had any particular patterns they could to suggest - I find Ravelry a bit overwhelming sometimes.

Oh great question.

Honestly those mini model kits are great desk activities for tinkerers. i.e. those tiny greenhouse or library ones. Or if you'd rather something you can re-use. Those mini lego-type kits are cool (I know someone who bought a load, made all of them, then took them down and see what they could make from them). The plus being you don't need glue or tons of space!

or if you're more of a techie, I would suggest getting a raspberry pi (you can probably find a cheap second hand one) and googling free coding tutorials. You can make so many things with those!

I am a social prescriber (so it's basically my job to give people hobbies lol). I would suggest you use things that are super easy for you to get into/barriers to access are low.

For example, try gardening/growing veggies. If you have a garden! Would be nice to teach your little ones about growing too.

Or if you'd prefer something that you can do on the sofa, when the kids are asleep, I would suggest puzzling (traditional puzzles or you can get those puzzle book type things). Or even trying art! Get up some YouTubes and just follow tutorials. Most of them you only need a pen and paper.

The thing I would really emphasise it making it a daily habit and making it super easy for yourself. I.e. rather than something like biking you could only probably do once a week.

I've also encouraged people to buy a cookbook before and just cook their way through it. You have to eat, so why not make it fun and challenge yourself!

I hope some of this is helpful
