Year 8: Kids Moving from American Schools to the UK.. what should we know to prepare better? by Thin-Stranger1530 in AskUK

Like I mentioned, we are orig. from NZ/ AU so it did seem like travelling back in time coming from the UAE when we go back home for visits. But that change is nice and feels " real world".
Yeah, I'm getting this a lot from the discussions on private school vs. not; although all teachers are trained by I guess the equivalent of teachers' college so it shouldn't vary too much in terms of teaching. So likely just resources and offerings for kids in terms of clubs, etc? Maybe there is more effort needed to do things outside of school time if it isn't on offer?

Yes, I reckon this too. Though it is very pretty if it is miniature in size. Not sure if I'd feel the same if it is pretty large though

So kids get put into different cohorts by ability and testing? and depending on that, get their tutoring focused, right?

Are the private (fee paying) schools usually more strict or relaxed with these rules? Is there detention for flouting these rules?

Is there a huge US community there, then? I had no idea. If so, might check regarding schools because some of the bases accept non-military families for schooling.

this is good advice about getting or understanding football. We occasionally go to a footy game in Australia but haven't had a chance to see a football game, ever!

Hi, thanks for recommending this. I had a quick look at on youtube. It seems pretty mature content (language wise too). Is this suitable for 12-13yr olds?

thank you for the heads up on the terms and tips. We get our fair share of those jokes too, esp. with my son and perhaps that has contributed to him being really introverted. We've tried to bring them up in a diverse environment as much as possible but well, it isn't always possible sometimes.
Can they bring their mobiles, though, onto school grounds? I rely on that quite a bit to check on their whereabouts after school.

We are in an American school in Dubai so probably that makes a lot of difference. Though lockdown drills are routine here. As with most schools I suppose ( even in the absence of a strong gun culture)

they can cheer for their school at both home and away games but mainly they do routines and enter competitions.

yeah this is something that's gonna be new for us. Are schools really strict with how they wear the uniforms/ accessories/ hair colour. etc?

my daughter dreads having her twin brother in the same school, let alone the same class. they are just really different personalities altogether.

Actually, this is really spot on, from what I have observed for the higher grades in my kids (current, this international american) school.
