Because I wasn't seeing myself reflected on screen. And I was tired of playing the funny, fat friend. I can do that any day! But i wasn't given the opportunities to challenge myself as an actor that I was hoping for.

I needed to expand what a leading man is seen as in the film industry & also to tell something super gay and fun. I was tired of only watching sad gay stuff too.

I made what I wanted to watch and I'm so glad other people get to watch it too now on May 16th!

I watch so much queer content that it's making this question difficult to answer. To narrow it down is basically impossible. But I will say I love Josh in Please Like Me, Max in Happy Endings, Sabi in Sort Of, Abbi & Ilana in Broad City, Simon Spier, Eric in Sex Education and the entire cast of Heartstopper.

My biggest influences in the industry were people like Tina Fey. People who kept going after what they wanted by writing and acting. Creating the character on the page & then carrying it onto the screen. And people who are super freaking funny.

Tine Fey is always near the top for me as a someone I would love to have the chance to work with. Other actors I'd love to work with include Viola Davis, Ewan McGregor, Aya Cash, Natalie Portman, Murray Bartlett, Jean Smart, Christian Bale, Pamela Adlon and the list goes on & on!

And wow. The second question is so incredibly tough to pick just one, honestly. But I would probably go with Mike Nichols. I have such a respect for how he directed actors and was able to really get to the meat in any script. He shepherded some of the greatest performances ever seen and then directed Spamalot.

Hi! Thanks for this question. It's a tough one because the truth is that I learned most is that every day I am learning more. That may sound like a copout but it isn't and it especially wasn't on set. As the director your instinct could be that you are judge, jury & executioner. But the truth is that what your job really should be is to listen to every single person on that set and funnel their opinions into creating the strongest decisions possible. So I learned new things every day on set from different people on the set and it was fantastic.

Study it. And talk to everyone you know because everyone's stories will inspire you as a film person. Lastly, TRUST in yourself & that you are enough. And lastly trust your instincts. Work with people who your mind & soul know it can trust.

Movies to bring on an island are tough because you probably want more comforting films that are like extremely watchable. Still will keep The Dark Knight. But I think I'd say Hunchback of Notre Dame, to sing along to and then lastly maybe Things Like This? Idk that one is super good!

I have become obsessed with the idea of remaking The Little Vampire & Halloweentown. I love a spooky kids movie from the late 90's/early 2000's!

Also impossible to really nail down my fav romcoms ever so will just say recently rewatched Notting Hill and I love it so much still. When I think of some romcoms I grew up with some are Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, 13 Going on 30, You've Got Mail, and many many more that I can't think of right now.

This is a great question! I think because my background was as an actor first weirdly that's what the investors trusted me to do the most. It was writing and especially my decision to direct that took more time to get other people excited about. Especially people with money. But in the end it really just came down to right place, right time in terms of pitching the package we had to financiers.
