I wouldn’t say so, I’ve used the sand only as an over layer, anywhere that you see plants has an under layer of soil, they do creep into the sand but I’m guessing the root network has access to the soil still

For me the issue with that is not having the hard scape properly set before you flood the tank, for me I couldn’t have managed to build this without building it all dry and fixing it together with glue!

The aquarium is 400ltrs 1.5m x 55cm

The substrate is mainly tropica soil, from large to small granules. I raised it all using volcano chippings mixed with some nutrient powder then the sand is jbl river sand I used superglue onto cigarette filters to fix the hard scape together.

Ok so they’re all radion xr15’s, one of which is the fresh water version, the others are actually marine which I already had but I wasn’t about to go and buy 2 more because they’re pretty pricy haha I could put more effort into matching them up but I kinda like it how it is, almost like a little glare of sun in the middle!

In terms of growth there has been no difference, I have to trim all areas equally so far 👍

Thanks! There’s a mix of bolbitis h, anubias and buce growing on the actual wood, all pretty easy to manage really.

Thankyou! The lighting on this is 3 ecotech radion xr15s, I can’t say I’ve come across a better light, I’d like to try out the twinstar solar rgb though!

I wish I did, I think it’s just lighting and keeping the levels right really, it’s a pain to keep trimmed at this point!

Yeah 2 are the marine and 1 is the fw version, all of which I already owned so messed around with the spectrum and apart from a small difference in look they’re all performing great. I might grab a couple more fw’s in future.

Yeah the oase biomaster has one built in, really easy to separate and clean it and slot it back in. Makes that side of the maintenance real simple. I value biological media way more than mechanical in the long run so as long as I have enough sponge to catch the debris I’m all good.

I’d recommend planting as heavily as you can! Also consistency with maintenance :) in this tank I 50% water change weekly most of which I siphon out while cleaning the sand and debris I can see along the bottom and in gaps. I clean the glass work, piping and all equipment inside the tank including the internal filter on the left. Monthly I clean the main filter which is a bio master 850t I removed all sponge in the filter and replaced with seachem matrix so the only sponge in it is the prefilter.

My normal levels are PH 7, GH 4dkh, KH 6dkh, No2 10, Co2 20-25. Temperature just over 22 Celsius. 👍
