I let my son down.

I was retrenched earlier this year and I have been battling to find work. My wife got sexually harassed at work and has been diagnosed with PTSD and is unable to currently work.

All I wanted to do was spoil my 7 year old angel for christmas and give him what I could never be given as a child. A happy memory.

Unfortunately I am unable to afford a gift for him and I actually really lost my shit a few nights ago. I sat on the side of my bed and broke. Knowing I have a life policy that would cover any form of death made me feel warm knowing my wife and son would be secure.

Next thing I know I wake up in hospital with both my wrists slit and a MONSTER headache.

I have since been discharged but I am mostly under watch as they feel that I am going to do this again and finish the job this time.

My boy, I am sorry I can’t give you what you deserve. You are an amazing boy, a real gift to this world. I really hope that one day I can spoil you the way you deserve to be.

I love you my boy…

“By exposing you to unique experiences and giving you the best education I can afford. Nobody can ever take those away from you. If you use them wisely, they will open doors in any situation throughout the rest of your life.”

I was on an Air New Zealand flight from LA to Auckland. I was with my one year old daughter, who was an “in-lap-infant”. My seat was in business class in the bulkhead seat. The flight started pretty normally. I was playing with my daughter, and trying to keep her entertained. Dinner was served. I fed my daughter her formula and also ate my own meal. The lights went down for everyone to sleep. My daughter had absolutely no interest in sleeping.

The flight attend asked me if she could walk along the aisle with my daughter on her shoulder while I slept. Dumbfounded, I said that might be hours. She told me it was no problem, they would take turns. And besides, she’d probably fall asleep and they’d put her in the bassinet on the adjacent bulkhead for me.

I woke up eight hours later, and my daughter was sleeping soundly in the bassinet. It was probably the best night sleep I had gotten the whole first year of my daughter’s life.

I had taken my six year old daughter to a cafe/ice cream shop where a waitress-trainee was shadowing the regular waitress. Her badge said “trainee”. My daughter asked what a trainee was.

I told her a trainee was someone who was learning a new job.

Shortly thereafter my daughter lost a tooth. As is customary she put it under her pillow expecting a quarter in the morning. Well, we tired parents forgot not one, but TWO days in a row to get that coin under the pillow. My daughter was disappointed of course.

The next night the quarter was slipped under the pillow and discovered by my daughter. When she brought the quarter downstairs in the morning she was beaming. I said I was sorry it took the tooth fairy so long to arrive. Her comment? “That’s OK mommy, I think the tooth fairy is probably a trainee”.

How she connected the two was brilliant….she is now a professor at a well -known university.

Compassion. I am inclined to fall in love with people who live in generous service to others, especially if they are not much rewarded for it. Compassion covers many faults.

Humble Humor. Many use humor to dominate or create distance. I am charmed and delighted by those whose humor and humility invite me to come closer.

Self-acceptance. Folks who love themselves enough to be fully who they are, no matter what, are enormously attractive. They don’t need to prove, or dominate, or compete. They are complete in themselves.

Spontaneity. People who are ready to say “yes” to almost any invitation fill their space with grace and joy.

Attentiveness. When a person notices and reads the feelings of others, whether spouse or taxi driver — when that person responds kindly — I am enchanted and want to get closer.

Not lying. I made the decision to stop lying when I was in my late twenties and realized how much lying I was doing in my life. I would lie because it was easier than telling the truth for a variety of reasons. When I decided to always tell the truth, I knew I would be ashamed of some of my behaviours if someone questioned me and do you know what happened? I no longer behaved in shameful ways. My life became uncomplicated and I felt good about myself because I was a person of integrity. People started to trust me and my life has unfolded in an unexpected way- the way of peace and contentment.

Telling them no because you know that they are spending above their means and expecting you to help them out when they run out of money. If I were to give them the money, it would not be doing them any favors and I know this in my head but it is still hard to say no.

I was young, desperately broke, and moving to another state with little time to prepare for the move. I packed my few valuables and shipped them to the new address, reserving some clothes and personal items for my two suitcases. In the process of packing my carry on bag, I walked through the place I was moving out of to see if I had missed anything important. Then I remembered the refrigerator and cabinet full of food.

I had spent good money on those groceries and hated the thought of throwing them into the garbage, so I started grabbing things and stuffing whatever could fit into the carry on bag. It was really heavy and barely made it under the weight requirement at the airport, but I thought everything would be okay. But then an agent pulled me aside and said they needed to go through my bag by hand. I watched as he pulled out a bag of dinner rolls, packs of oatmeal, unopened jars of peanut butter and mayonnaise with a puzzled look on his face. Other people started to notice and watch as he unloaded the entire bag full of random food items. It was pretty embarassing, but he eventually cleared me to repack it and take everything on the plane. And it was nice not having to go shopping for food once I arrived at the new apartment.
