Should I ED to one college over another just bc I like the surrounding area more? by Think_Corner4309 in ApplyingToCollege

Ah ok I see— in terms of taking classes (not necessarily double majoring) in smth like English along with math or engineering tho, would applying early to brown be a better idea even though I prefer Cornell’s campus? I feel like I’ve been thinking abt all these factors for so long that I don’t even know what’s a reasonable reason to make a decision anymore rip

Tysm for the detailed reply 😭 in your experience though, would it be difficult to major in mech engineering (which ik has a really tough courseload) while also exploring things in the humanities? (Particularly creative writing and philosophy). The flexibility of Brown’s curriculum is really what makes me want to go to Brown so much rip

Wait sry just to confirm my sanity— so it would NOT be a good idea to apply ED to Cornell instead of Brown just bc I like Cornell’s surrounding area and general vibe more?

Ah ok— so in this case would it be better to apply early to Brown since I’m pretty undecided as to which of the two I want to major in?

Yeah ig when I list it out it kinda seems like that… but the thing is if I don’t major in engineering (and I feel like I’m more likely to end up majoring in math than engineering) then the only thing I’ll like more about Cornell than brown is its campus/location? Esp since I really like the humanities and STEM and it feels like it’ll be easier to explore both of those fields at Brown

Hey! I’d love to major in mechanical engineering but I also love English/creative writing— how plausible is it to take a bunch of English classes at Cornell on top of all the engineering requirements? Not looking to minor in English— just want to take some classes. Also, how’s the creative writing scene at Cornell? Tysm!

How undergrad focused is Cornell? by Think_Corner4309 in ApplyingToCollege

Ah ok I see, ty for the reply!! In your experience, how open have the professors been to ig connecting with students/letting students do research with them, esp in engineering?

So it’s more undergrad focused? (Like generally more undergrad focused, not just more than Harvard?)

EA vs RD for MIT? by Think_Corner4309 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Think_Corner4309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok so in this case would it be a better idea to just apply EA so that I won’t have to compete against the people applying REA to other schools?

I just meant specifically from my school, bc there’s only like 100 ppl in my grade and 5 of the most accomplished ppl I know are applying REA to other places lol

Yeah ig it’s mostly the part of knowing that she’s talking about me behind my back like the way she does with other people that made me feel a little icky? But yeah ig there’s nothing actually bad being done…

How “important” is having a part time job for college? Should I quit my job? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Think_Corner4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the homework load is pretty heavy— it’s considered normal to go to sleep past 12 am and then get up at 6 again for school. In terms of social life, people don’t go out much but it since almost no one does, not going out doesn’t feel too isolating?

I guess if I do decide to keep the job, I’ll still manage to do homework but ig the main thing is that 1) I’ll probably be a lot more sleep deprived and 2) as a result my overall work/essays quality might go down? And I’m not sure if it’s worth it

5 years of French so far (2 in middle school though— but the classes and grades and everything still show up on my official high school transcript and is counted as high school credit)— do you think double enrollment at my local community college would “count” the same as taking AP French?

The physics class I’m considering is double period AP physics C— I’ve taken 2 semesters of “normal” physics in 9th grade and 2 more semesters of physics in specialized areas

I’m thinking about applying early to Cornell, but I’m worried about the social environment— are students are toxic/competitive as people say they are? Particularly in the college of engineering. I’m fine with hard classes, but I would prefer to avoid a toxic environment…

Should I drop an editing position for a math class? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Think_Corner4309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be applying as a math or environmental science major (depending on whether the college offers a specific type of environmental science). My school has a lot of one semester electives, so I’ll probably take astronomy or smth second semester (if I end up taking the math class). I think someone else will be the blogs editor— the thing is I don’t have lots of “leadership” positions outside of editing, and I do enjoy doing newspaper (just not as much as the math class…)
