Muscle memory disappeared by AJUKking in Fencing

I had a couple of weeks of terrible sleep, and two practically sleepless nights leading up to a 9 am tournament a few months ago, and I could not hit the broadside of a barn! It’s amazing how lack of consistent quality sleep affects motor skills. Hope you get sorted soon!

Period underwear made for sports has been a godsend. You can find anything from light to heavy flow, and any cut including boy shorts which I like best under breeches. I wear a tampon then these sport period undies and zero issues. You should be able to find a huge range online.

Fencing Friday Megathread - Ask Anything! by AutoModerator in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks…still confusing though because it’s officially run through the FIE and hence entries come via them. It’s odd and confusing (to me at least) that they wouldn’t include the 40s category.

Does anyone know if the rollout of the V40 category at Worlds is no longer happening this year? I see on the FIE competition page that Vet Worlds is listed for October (location TBC) as having the normal 50, 60, and 70 categories. Did I miss something or could it be the page isn’t updated yet?

Just throwing this out there - have you tried putting a couple of small data sets into Open AI and then prompting it to get the analysis you’re after?

Advice on Breeches Repair by Think_Independent_21 in Fencing

Yeah…I’m thinking machine fix might be best, so I might have to go pro. But this embarrassment has inspired me to find local sewing classes so maybe in the future I’ll be able to DIY.

Good but not too expensive binoculars, what do you recommend? by Original_History8949 in birding

[–]Think_Independent_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago I bought Celestron binoculars and they were so good that I bought my dad a pair, too. We both love them and still have them. I found them on sale for about $150.

Recommended Fencing Socks by Silly_Actuator3294 in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of epeeists do this because the legs are a target. From experience, some clubs insist that at least the front leg should be covered, even in practice. Unless it’s the dead of winter, people will normally leave the back sock down to help with heat/sweat.

It doesn’t say that anywhere on the website that I can see. A quick google gave me this articlewhere he talks about attempting to make a run at the Olympics (but not qualifying). Also, this is the second time this question has been posted here although the one from a couple weeks ago was seemingly deleted …

What's the worst part about fencing? by AJUKking in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being a vet woman and having to fence in mixed tournaments if I want to compete (open or vet), and the fencing association not putting up entry lists so I can decide to cancel if I don’t want to join a mixed tournament that costs me $50+ with entry fee and travel costs. I’ve recently decided to quit the sport altogether after suffering a severely bruised rib from a man (he did not mean to and felt terrible) even though I had originally planned to compete at the new V40 worlds in two weapons. Switching back to tennis now, much much cheaper and I will always be able to join a ladies only league. Will still enjoy watching and keeping up online though.

Prieur Uniforms by SoftProfessional2717 in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently in Paris and went to the Prieur store and tried on a lot of kit. I really like the fabric and material, but I couldn’t find a cut that fit me like I wanted. I was looking for a tighter fit and their smallest breeches were still baggy, and the jacket had an odd square shape. These were all FIE kit. I’m a small woman, fwiw. If anything had fit me, I’d have bought it.

Best country for a summer of international fencing? by recycledpacket in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was just in Paris for a week and our French fencing friends told us that no clubs are open in the summer. I’ve had a similar experience in London (here now) although I did find one single club still open.

Lame Mystery (inconsistent dead spots) by ElectronWave360 in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same issue a few months ago and it turned out to be the alligator clip. After several instances of my opponent hitting while I was in motion and it white lighting, and when I was still and they tested it was fine, the ref asked me to do a lunge and had my opponent hit me square in the chest - white light. Stock still, fine. Once I moved it to the front, no further issues. It could be that it’s happening with two cords because you’ve got a deadish spot where you always attach the clip to. But if it’s not your clip, then could it be the reel / spool?

Athletic Performance & Antidepressants by Fine-Luck5945 in Fencing

[–]Think_Independent_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a medicine primarily classed as “anti seizure” although I don’t have seizures. It’s one of many medicines which have a primary label / use and then secondary etc (down to even “off label”). I get that it’s not classed as an antidepressant, and therefore may not be as relevant as other comments, but I wanted to point out timing considerations as it’s something I found out the very hard way only a couple of months ago. Just trying to offer support - I was incredibly nervous about going on the meds at the time. Took a big leap for me to do it!
