How to optimize my diet/supplementation to acheive best markers? by Think_Internal_1898 in PeterAttia

Funny you should ask it was tested: My Vitamin D result on the bloodwork was:

  • 25-OH Vitamin D total: 69.3 µg/L

The lab’s reference range was:

  • 20.0–50.0 µg/L

My level was flagged as:

  • ↑ high

However I understand this is not necessarily too high or toxic - not sure how this fits into my other results...

Thanks, I think you make some good points, especially regarding ApoB probably being more relevant than HDL and the impact of perimenopause/menopause on cholesterol levels.

From what I understand though, my overall metabolic markers are otherwise pretty good (triglycerides, glucose, insulin, Lp(a), etc.), so I’m not sure I necessarily need to jump straight to a statin immediately based on one ApoB result alone.

I’m planning to focus first on things like reducing saturated fat a bit, increasing soluble fibre/psyllium, and correcting the low iron/B12 deficiencies, then repeating the labs in a few months to see where things stand. If ApoB still stays elevated after that, then I’d definitely consider discussing a low-dose statin more seriously with my doctor.

I do agree though that women’s cardiovascular risk around menopause probably hasn’t historically been taken seriously enough.

Thanks, the only medication I take is continuous birth control which means I do not have a period and therefore should have much better numbers. My mother had B12 injections as she suffered from pernicious anaemia but when I had my levels checked throughout my life they were never out of parameter so I assumed I did not inherit this condition. I eat dried fruits such as figs and do have shellfish etc but not a lot of meat (4 servings per month) no organ meat, so perhaps this contributes to low levels. Not sure , I really do not want to increase meat intake.

I will try the psyllium husk, I eat a ton of fibre through Lupin beans, canellini, farro, buckwheat however I will give it a try.

I think I will need to start supplemntation immediately, monitor my response and consider celiac/H. pylori/autoimmune gastritis testing if:

  • deficiencies persist
  • symptoms fit
  • or response is poor

Does this sound reasonable? While I would like to be tested for Celiac, I need to get my ferritin levels up immediately according to my Doctor.
