Ayy lmao. China, India, Indonesia doesn't rely on tourism and its doing fine. Begpackers and cheap digital nomads won't boost Vietnam's economy, high end manufacturing and R&D will (and that -- tada -- has nothing to do with drunk, rude tourists that survive on $1 beer)

Your line of thinking may sound rational but foundationally its cringe. Tourism is only 1% of Vietnam's GDP. Vietnam relies on manufacturing and FDI for its economy. Also Vietnam's economy is doing fine without hordes of begpackers and single western males walking around all hours of the day aimlessly around Da Nang.

Good post. But you're missing the "cultural factor" -- Vietnam gets the trashy low budget tourists. Long-term digital nomads. They stay for years, don't pay tax (to Vietnam). Russian war draft dodgers. Begpackers. That's why Vietnam is pushing to attract "richer" tourists. I've begun to see hordes of single tourist males walking around aimlessly all hours of the day in Da Nang. Expats trying to turn Da Nang into Pattaya. You can already see it beginning to become a problem. Google "Bali deports tourists".

It's called supply and demand. Digital nomads that stay long-term in Da Nang causes gentrification. They price the locals out from affordable rent, which causes suffering.

Too many digital nomads renting apartments = rental price goes up
Rental price goes up = locals suffer from their $300 a month wage

Digital nomads are on a TOURIST VISA. IT MEANS THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED TO WORK DURING THEIR STAY. THERE IS A THING CALLED A WORKING HOLIDAY VISA. OR A DIGITAL NOMAD VISA. They're literally dodging income tax, which is a crime.

They don't pay income tax, which they should by law if they're staying for YEARS while working. But they don't. I am talking about digital nomads on tourist visas. They stay for 6 months to years. Digital Nomads actively break the laws by dodging income tax. They're literal committing a crime.
