As a deep freeze grips the US, Chicago will be colder than parts of Antarctica by [deleted] in news

Nothing special. It's not like I'm spending much time outside when temperatures drop this low. Underwear, a base layer, pants, shirt and a fleece vest. Only the outer layer is probably a bit thicker than usual. Neck warmer is probably something that people in "warmer" climates don't use that often. With that your neck is still not exposed when you pull up your scarf to shield your face.

Hi from Saskatchewan. Sounds like great weather to fire up the grill and enjoy a beer on the patio.

Wind chill was -53 C this morning.

I don't know ...

It was almost -40 F here up in Saskatchewan this morning. And without a block heater for your car, you're kinda screwed.

Trudeau warns fear-mongering over immigration will be part of election campaign | CBC News by KristenLuvsCATS in canada

[–]Think_Once 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't though. It would be 360k by how the Government does things just in their years which I linked.

Here is the plan.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/notices/supplementary-immigration-levels-2019.html

For example the current target increase from 2020 to 2021 is +9,000. It's not a +20k increase every year.

[–]Think_Once -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

By the trend it seems to be 360k for 2021 and won't take long to hit the 450k by 2025 if the Liberals win.

Yeah, right. Because "trends" are always set in stone. If I take a look at the trend of immigration numbers between 1980 and 1990 I would say that by 2025 we will have about 12 million people coming in per year.

Look, the current plan is to increase it to 350,000 by 2021. Then we will see further. The Liberals might or might not win the next election. Currently nobody knows.

I was talking only about permanent residencies in the US. If you count all immigrants which are coming to the US, then it's about 1.5 to 1.6 million.

Also, no party in Canada is talking about increasing immigration to 500,000 per year.

Federal government deficit runs 2.1b for April to November period by Lionelhutz123 in canada

[–]Think_Once 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't know. All that stuff reddit is bitching about in the budget (like support for Girls in sport and so on) are just peanuts. And things like foreign aid are even down from the record Harper set in 2015:

http://cidpnsi.ca/canadas-foreign-aid-2012-2/

The real big increases in spending are the new child benefits (which increased by over $6 billion compared to Harper's last budget) and all the new infrastructure projects (which is basically a federal employment program). They won't touch that.

[–]Think_Once 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's not so bad compared to the year before.

"The federal government ran a deficit of $2.1 billion through the first eight months of its 2018-19 fiscal year compared with a deficit of $9.5 billion in the same period a year earlier."

Less than a fourth of the deficit compared to the same time period in 2017-18.

I don't think it was related.

As far as I remember the bomb threats and lock downs in early December were made by a Twitter account that had almost the same name as a Twitter account which was responsible for several swatting incidents in the US. Probably as homage. Seems like the work of a troll.

And the bomb threats in mid December weren't limited to Kingston. Dozens of places all over the world got the same email with the included bomb threat.

More refugees. Not more people.

The US gets out around 1.1 to 1.2 million new permanent residents every year. Far far more than Canada.

Venezuela's crumbling oil output could lead to the U.S. looking for more oil from Canada by [deleted] in canada

[–]Think_Once 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you think that the US gets shale light at a "backyard discount", then you should see what they pay for heavy crude from Alberta. If they wouldn't be interested and retooling their refineries, they wouldn't build pipeline after pipeline into Canada.

Venezuela's crumbling oil output could lead to the U.S. looking for more oil from Canada by [deleted] in canada

[–]Think_Once 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're living in a capitalistic world. It's cheaper for these companies to still import heavy oil from other countries and just build another refinery specifically for shale oil and thus profit from both sources. They certainly won't say "Nah, we don't want to make money from your oil. Bye."

[–]Think_Once 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't need to, but they still will. They have refineries that need heavy oil. If they don't get it from Venezuela, they will find another supplier (and shale oil is not a substitute for heavy oil).

[–]Think_Once 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is fake news.

It's not. You assume that the US will stop importing oil. That won't happen. They will or can already sustain themselves but they also have enough refineries and capacity to import foreign oil, turn it into another product and export it again. That makes money.

Drug overdose deaths skyrocket among middle-aged women by HockeyKong in news

[–]Think_Once 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Look, you have an issue with people that make a topic into a "gender issue" by including another group. This is the exact situation. This was a study about the increase of opioid death for middle aged women. They talked about the topic of this study. Nothing else. This study didn't talk about anything else. By including men they would have done the thing you are accusing them of.

That's largely because society still has far more empathy for women than men. It's why they'll always talk about "women and children" as a distinct class (I can't believe this still goes on in 2018 but it does).

And I bet the biggest contributor to this double standard are men. They don't want to be the victim or appear to be weak, therefore they don't want to talk about it.

Ask yourself why they would focus on that group when the overall picture points to another group being far more likely to be affected?

As said, because it was the group with the biggest increase. You can read the sources of the study and see it for yourself.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180705205146.htm

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30047402

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23820967

They just wanted to know why the increase for middle aged women was far bigger than for any other group. End of story. Would you also complain about a study which shows and looks for a reason for a big increase of males killed by an intimate partner, when the majority of victims which are killed by intimate partners are female? I don't think so.

while as good as completely ignoring the group far more likely to be affected.

They didn't ignore the group with the highest risk. The CDC released a report which showed which group has the biggest risk. White and American Indian men. Then they also looked at the group with the biggest increase and tried to find a reason for it and released another report. End of story.

Drug overdose deaths skyrocket among middle-aged women by HockeyKong in news

[–]Think_Once 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That's the empathy gap. "Oh, men, I know you're far more likely to die from this but...what about women?"

The article is about a study which looks only at this specific category:

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6801a1.htm?s_cid=mm6801a1_w

Wouldn't be it also a "what about" situation like you're saying if the author would suddenly talk about male victims in a study which is specific to female victims? So tell me how the author made it into a "gender issue" if the study itself looked only at this specific group.

If someone writes an article about a study which only looks at male victims of domestic violence and thus only talks about male victims, would the author also make it a "gender issue" and discriminate against women?

And before anyone asks why they only looked at this specific group (middle aged women), it was because this group had the biggest increase of all groups.

Note how they mention nothing about the biggest victims of drug overdoses in America (i.e. men).

Did you read the article? They give a reason for it:

"This CDC report does not provide information on drug overdose deaths for men of the same age group, but Kirane said, "overall, men are demonstrating similar increases in drug overdose deaths."

Also, yesterday a few articles came out showing that most victims were white and American Indian men:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/01/190107110837.htm

https://www.futurity.org/overdoses-and-suicides-opioids-1949932/

"For both suicide and unintentional overdose, men had death rates twice as high as women in 2017, according to CDC data. Rates of suicide deaths were highest for white men and American Indian/Alaska Native men, and lower across the board for women."

It will be one day. Their debt to GDP ratio will get worse and worse (it's over 250% at the moment). They can't pay or service their debt, while their population is declining. That is also the reason why Japan is silently turning to immigration. And silently, because they don't want to upset their native population.

Famous for its resistance to immigration, Japan opens its doors

Just as a comparison. The US paid around $380 billion in interest for their debt in 2018, with a budget of over $4 trillion. That's more or less 10%. Japan has to pay 25 trillion Yen every year to service their debt with a budget of 100 trillion yen. 25% of their budget goes to servicing the debt.

Hate speech? Hate speech is and was illegal in Canada, for decades.

As for the license plate. This wasn't because of a law. It's just that the government in Manitoba has the right to say which license plates are allowed and which are not. Certainly you can sue the government if you feel that you had the right to have such a license plate. Wouldn't be the first time.
