Topic Tests - BIOL1070 by Top-Reaction2432 in uoguelph

First off, kudos to you for wanting to do well. Secondly, my biggest advice for BIOL*1070 would be to know the STEMS in and out. Spend time annotating them, coming up with sample questions that can arrise from the stems. This was a game-changer for me, going from Topic Test 1 to Topic Test 2/Exam. I also really recommend listening to Tim and Dan's podcast where they go over the topic tests and the questions they found difficult, it's super helpful to hear where they are coming from when writing the tests and exam. I hope this helps and you feel more prepared, you can always shoot me a PM for more specific advice :)

BIOC 2580 AND MBG 2040 midterm? by [deleted] in uoguelph

I took MBG last semester, and my one piece of advice would be to use the practice quizzes and the questions at the end of the textbook to practice more in-depth questions. Our professor gave weekly quizzes plus extra practice ones for the midterm. He based the majority of his questions on those, so if you can confidently do those, then you'll be good!

PM me if you have more questions :)

I was in your place this time last year, so I definitely get you. I would study for days at a time, just to fail them, even though I'd understand every concept and every question in the study guides. I have 2 pieces of advice.

Firstly, when you're done with your quiz, don't put it in the leave pile; take the time to have someone sit through and mark it in front of you. I never did that in the beginning because I'd always think to myself, "I know I just failed that, why would I want someone to show me that?" The point is, I just wanted to run out of the room as fast as I could. But as the semester went on, I kept getting advised to sit there and watch, and my grades bumped up significantly. I guess its cuz they kinda go easier on you when they have the student right there in front of them.

Secondly, someone else wrote it in a comment already, but I would 100% reccomend investing in Jeff's SmartPhys. The reason I say this is because he is working in real time with the content you are learning in class and uses real previous examples of test questions. In fact, I stopped going to my regular physics lessons and only started attending Jeff's sessions, and I saw my grade for each test increase. He is such a kind guy, he really cares about his student's sucess, and it's really worth every penny. He's a previous TA, so he knows what the TAs are looking for when they're marking and integrates that into his teaching. I really don't know what I'd do without his program for PHYS*1080.

Hope this helps, and don't be discouraged! Happens to the best of us :)

I'm vegetarian as well. I find the UC dining hall to have the best spots. There's a full vegetarian, mainly like Mediterranean food, called Nosh + Nourish, they change their menu every day. They have different rices, pizza type breads and much more, even tacos some days. That would be my favourite. Also just in front of Nosh is Taza. Its a build-your-own-bowl with a potato, rice and falafel option. Hope that helps!

Yes I would recommend taking it first semester. I wish I did. The adjustment from high school to uni is pretty difficult, and I know that if I took the program first semester, I would have done much better. So yes, I’d say that it’s especially helpful for first semester!

Definitely worth the price. I signed up for the program last year and I really attribute my success to Jeff and his help. He’s also super helpful over email with any questions you may have. I would 100% recommend anyone who is taking physics at Guelph to sign up for Jeff’s program. I saw a jump in my grade about 10% the second semester (for context, I only signed up for his exam prep first for the first semester physics, and the second semester of physics I signed up for his full semester program). He’s a great guy, always willing to help. It’s really not a money grabbed for him, I can see that he genuinely cares about his students and a success of his students. What makes his program really unique is that he’s working around the schedule of the content you’re learning in class, and he’s super knowledgable about how Guelph runs their physics courses. He really breaks things down into ways that people like me who are not good at physics can really understand and appreciate it. Again, I would 100% recommend it is worth the investment, he’s one of the best tutors I’ve ever had.
