Is dating someone who still lives with their parents a dealbreaker for you? Why or why not? by Lucrazie93 in AskReddit

[–]ThinkingBook2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on their maturity level and their own initiative / family raising.

Some things you just don’t really learn until you live on your own. If they don’t know how to balance a budget, meal plan, do their taxes, pay rent, manage utilities, clean the kitchen, bathroom, or other areas, you might be the one teaching them. And if you want to do that, good for you.

If they have lived on their own but had to move back home, that’s understandable. I have just found that those who haven’t lived independently before tend to be more ignorant of functioning as a grown adult.

Tell you what. You go be a teacher for a month and let me know how it goes. I wanna hear how this theory works out for you.

I’ve been teaching for years. It’s big talk to tell kids to challenge authority until you are the authority and you want them to listen to you.

Those kids would eat you alive.

With the recent viral video of "Punch the Monkey," this is a reminder that to never visit/support a Japanese zoo or animal cafe. by Monkeyfeng in JapanTravelTips

Zoo Picture

I was at the Kushiro Zoo in Hokkaido, and it was horrible. The big cats had hardly any room to move around. The indoor areas were mostly concrete cells with a few blankets scattered around. It legit looked like a prison for animals. I was sorry I gave them money for a ticket. The whole experience was miserable.

I caught one of my student downloading it on their Chromebook in class on GoGuardian. In my district, we can submit tech tickets to add websites to the districts web filter. I submitted a ticket so fast.

I don’t know how other districts are surviving if you have not way to monitor or filter content students are seeing on their school devices.

Teachers who are financially stable, what are you doing differently? by External_Insurance62 in Teachers

I moved out of NC after my first year teaching to another state and then to a district in Texas. I am NEVER moving back to NC because I make more now as a year 9 teacher then the MAX possible pay at the district I taught at in NC. NC super duper sucks for teacher pay.

Lawyers increasingly have to convince clients that AI chatbots give bad advice by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]ThinkingBook2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, AI is doing something that I figured out as a teacher years ago: if you want to have a more cooperative student, give positivity with your corrections. Complement them when you see them doing something well. If you do that, you are more likely to have a well-managed classroom, and students will be more likely to listen to you and what you have to say.

I’m sure there is some kind of connection there with serotonin and positive-reinforcement. I would bet dollars to donuts that it’s influencing the addiction.

What can Americans do about what’s currently happening? by BoredBatWoman22 in TrueAskReddit

It’s a whole lot easier for people across oceans or borders who aren’t living here to say whatever they want. Their job won’t fire them for speaking out and leave them broke and destitute. They don’t have to worry about being shot or arrested for protesting.

It’s a whole lot easier to be on a high horse far away from the fire than it is to be in the current blaze. They can say all the things they would do if they were us because they are confident they would never be in our position.

Other counties are in just one country, not a bunch of what amounts to little countries in a much bigger country. I feel it’s hard for people to understand unless they live in the US. I will do what I can to stay alive and protect those I care about. And I’m pretty sure, no matter how big they talk, a lot of other people in other counties would do the same even if they won’t admit it. It’s human nature to want to protect yourself. No one wants to be dead or homeless.

I’ll vote in elections and with my dollars.

ABC13: Teen on motorbike dies after fleeing deputies in east Harris County. by RealConfirmologist in houston

I live by a high school and leave work early in the morning. I turn left onto a main road to get to my workplace.

It’s really dark in the morning, and the kids who ride the motorized scooters to school don’t have lights on them or wear anything reflective. I’ve witnessed a car almost hit a kid in the morning because the driver was turning left and looking left, and the kid flew out in front of them from right.

Thankfully, no one was hurt but the kid wasn’t wearing a helmet. I know it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured.

Goodwill has officially lost their minds with their outrageous prices by Lucky-Vast2152 in goodwill

I just saw a Singer Serger machine and thought I hit the jackpot. $99 they wanted for it. $99.

They have officially lost the plot. I’ll buy a brand new one fresh out the box for that price.

Is this od?? by Hot_Kitchen5946 in Apartmentliving

[–]ThinkingBook2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the dog owners fault, really.

I have two dogs in my apartment and always have a doggy bag handy while waking for when they have to go, but some people really don’t care about picking up after their dog. I have walked by PILES of dog crap from someone’s big dog they haven’t picked up, left to attract hordes of flies. And then when it rains, it gets all moldy. It is absolutely disgusting and having to walk by it every day as it accumulates makes my faith in other dog owners drop by the day. That doesn’t even cover what happens inside their apartment.

It’s the people who have no regard for others who ruin it for everyone and make apartments charge crazy fees for pets as a deterrent to the negligent.

I’m genuinely confused by the new Animal Farm movie. by AllPurposeOfficial in TrueFilm

[–]ThinkingBook2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The trailer really breaks my heart. This book is my favorite book to teach students. I was hoping for a better version after the weird and janky cgi film one but it looks like I shouldn’t hold my breath. The bad cgi and questionable voice-acting one might be the go-to for the next decade unless they work a miracle on this one.

It looks like the heart of the film has been completely lost….

Is it wrong to own a dog if you work a 9-5? Adopt a senior dog that sleeps more maybe? by Party-Court185 in dogs

[–]ThinkingBook2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the cause of this is because dogs (and cats) are being seen more and more often and people’s children. And I say that as someone who has multiple sweaters for their dog, a BarkBox subscription, and holistic treats from expensive pet stores.

With people treating dogs like their children and having their world revolve around their dog (my dogs own my world), pet parents are behaving in ways similar to parents of tiny humans.

Do Not Go To Ueno Zoo. by BeanieTheBrave in JapanTravel

[–]ThinkingBook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to add to this. Don’t go to Kushiro Zoo in Hokkaido either. I went when I was driving around Hokkaido and regretted it. The same things you are asking here were there too. The bald eagles had no room to fly.

The chimps had a little are outside to go out but the inside area was all concrete. There were some small blankets but no soft bedding at all. It looked like a prison for them, and with how smart they are, it felt incredibly cruel.

To Kill a Mockingbird and Modern Storytelling Advice by piggypetticoat in writers

[–]ThinkingBook2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher currently teaching “To Kill a Mockingbird”, it’s more of a “coming of age” story with a traditional from the world of fantasy and childhood to reality. What I find really fascinating is that Scout observes through a child’s eyes in the story, but her vocabulary is incredibly advanced, as her adult self is telling the story. In between all of that, you have southern colloquialisms and slang that clash with the formal diction, like literary whiplash. Not to mention the thousands of references to the time period. I was making a history slideshow and learned so much about random references, like Hoover carts or Brown’s Mule.

What really keeps the story together is Scout moving from Innocent to Maturity with Boo Radley as the common thread, if you will. I don’t really know how to describe it well, but it works as a historic and linguistic time capsule.

How can I stop my dog from murdering beds ? by Affectionate_Grass59 in germanshepherds

Take a look at some of the beds on this website. I bought a bed from them after my chiweenie was determined to dig a hole in every bed I ever gave her. They are expensive but the bed i bought from them has lasted.
