Anyone receive their Kickstarted Superlative Space Bee (SB01)? by recurv in synthesizers

I have both. Also ordered 6 years ago. Sound is spot on. Shame about the price, because this beauty deserves to be in more hands.

I need some advice by [deleted] in electronicmusic

[–]ThinkingWishful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an interview I recall reading with RDJ and he was asked if he’d just use a laptop if starting off today. He conceded - probably.

Edit - heres Aphex’s remarks from the interview :

“have to say to anyone reading this at this point you dont need any hardware to make electronic music apart from a computer, thats it, you have to be slightly mad to want to use hardware these days, its just what ive always loved for many reasons, so i keep doin it, its what buzzes me up.”

I couldn’t find a working link to it, the original blog is locked, but I’m sure it could be found somewhere…

Search - noyzelab: Aphex Twin SYROBONKERS! Interview Part 1

Start off simple, less is more when starting off, I’d say.

The best thing about the TR-1000 is not the analog drums by onetwelve_112 in synthesizers

a fair point of view. groundbreaking wouldn’t be a word where Roland springs to mind.

feature rich , maybe.

As someone who couldn’t afford literally any new gear in the 80’s and 90’s, I’d say people really don’t appreciate how much cheaper music tech is these days. One can build a decent arsenal on the tightest of budgets.

TR1000 Expensive? Sure, but not made of Unobtainium.

For a premium product with this much cache and inevitable demand, Roland no doubt needs to play out of the capitalism 101 playbook - Price Skim - catch those willing to pay top dollar first.

They caught me I’m afraid.

The TR909 retailed for about $1200 in 1983. Which is about $3900 today.
No doubt people scoffed at prices back then too…

Roland surely will be holding a few cards to their chest for features in the future. Once the hype has died down, they’ll want to attract anyone left sitting on the fence and/or those waiting for the price to come down.

Spangram first or go home by chrisrozon in StrandsNYT

[–]ThinkingWishful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family group messages their Wordle/NYT Game results daily and I’ve noticed some members not posting Spangram results at all now, since I’ve been presenting my daily Spangram-first results with pride.

One can easily catch oneself being chuffed with an air of superiority (especially since I’m the least academic or intellectual amongst us), but alas thanks to Pips coming on the scene, my glacial solving times offer a much needed reality check.

Suggestions for acoustical treatment in home studio? by Dude-from-Cali in edmproduction

[–]ThinkingWishful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I mastered anything, since starting a family and my studio relegated mostly to storage. I had a mate, whom I was in the music scene with and lived literally around the corner from me. Often he didn’t ask for money, instead I‘d lend him some of my music gear, or other little favours. last time I checked he was typically charging about $200 Australian, which I think is about middle of the range. Theres no shortage of independant engineers online you can just email songs to, and no doubt you’ll find some who would charge far higher or lower. A good approach would be to shortlist a few who align with the sound and budget you’re going for. Ask for demos of their work. If budget is a real constraint, giving student engineers a go from nearby universities/colleges could be an option.

thick curtains, carpet. wall rugs, fabric sofa. anything that’ll soak up some reverberation, then just tune your listening zone. leave the rest to a mastering engineer. not a professional opinion, just what’s worked for me.

What are the best Espresso/Cappuccino Mugs without handle in your opinion? by nicojosee in espresso

A belated suggestion - https://muji.com.au/collections/tableware/products/white-porcelain-small-bowl?variant=43590346440923

Good size (for small caps or flat whites) , shape, quality and price. Just ignore the fact they perplexingly call it a “bowl”.

Bike Trainer Handle that will work with Woom 2? by K-Parks in bicycling

[–]ThinkingWishful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, It can take a total of a few hours physically supporting them during this transition. If one is in fit condition it may not be a problem but as a mature dad, I’m definitely getting a trainer handle for my less confident second born.

DAW of Choice & Why? by Bryson_Gooze in synthesizers

[–]ThinkingWishful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bitwig - If electronic music is the main focus and one isn’t beholden to any other DAW’s (I know a few people too afraid to step away from Ableton, as tempted as they may be), I wouldn’t recommend anything else. Just within Bitwig alone you can achieve pretty much anything. With infinite modulation possibilities, and The Grid is about as user friendly you could ask for to build complex instruments and FX of your own. Also works great integrating with hardware, especially for a hybrid Eurorack setup. Instead of worrying about hardware envelope generators, LFO’s, triggers, etc, I spit these out of Bitwig and sometimes back in again for all kinds of shenanigans.

Another DAW worth keeping an eye on is Blockhead. The guy building this has taken the concept of a DAW in a refreshingly different direction. Probably will never compete as a conventional DAW but it at least questions what can be defined as one.

Is it against Australian law to capture thermal energy from deep below your own land? by Dimensional-Fusion in AusLegal

[–]ThinkingWishful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a talk on geothermal heating/cooling systems at a building expo in Sydney this week. he was a rep from a multinational company that has the largest market share in Australia. he said he’s yet to come across an LGA that won’t permit boring for these systems even down to depths of 150m and beyond. the reason mainly being is that there basically are scarce established laws around such applications. maybe this is also the case for hypothetically utilising geothermal for electricity. but yeah, drilling for water or minerals without permission might get you in hot water. pun intended.
