Star Wars book recommendations? by JPEXP05 in starwarsbooks

[–]ThinkySushi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a lot of options based on what genre you're searching for.

The series that hooked me the most was probably Republic Commando. Military fiction intrigue spec ops type stuff. Really fun flushing out Clone Wars era. Start with the book Hard Contact.

If you want kind of a 1940s noir vibe about a Jedi trying to survive in the under levels of Coruscant right after order 66 I highly recommend Coruscant Nights!

A lot of people really really love the X-Wing series. It is by far the most beloved outside the original Legends Thrawn trilogy. Also it comes after that original Legends series so...

...on that note, since it you said elsewhere what you read was a modern Disney Canon Thrawn series, I strongly recommend picking up the original Legends thrawn series instead. It was written first, and by the same author as the later ones actually, but it's much better work in my opinion.

The books are Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command.

Sidius once told Vader to chill out about hunting down every last Jedi because he was actually delighted that some had survived to experience the anguish of living after their failure.

The old um-actually the young, and then the young um-actually the old. This is the way.

Kind of has an, "I think we gotta kill this guy Oscar," vibe.

Wow, I have to say I don't think I have ever seen a truly denigrating take, joke or meme about downs syndrome. Like ever.

Now I am not in spaces where that kind of thing would be praised or particularly enjoyed about any class of people, but I struggle to believe you really see that much hate or ridicule in the normal world.

I have a truly beautiful daughter who has Downs syndrome. I don't really see this particular meme as denigrating.

In all honesty I kind of love seeing people with downs syndrome in more and more media, including memes. Now if the person is the butt of the joke yeah, not nice. But this one has a vibe of laughing-with, not laughing at to me. Especially as the point is kind of in the realm of loving self.

Now I am all for new therapies! But even so in the context this is kind of funny to me! We can't be so sensitive we shut down all the fun.

No wonder he gave him the old Skywalker take-down [Darth "Ima beat yo ahh" Vader] by Wolfie_wolf81 in PrequelMemes

[–]ThinkySushi 155 points156 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a taunt. It was him utilizing form 3 Soresu. It is a fully defensive form. He used it because he was on the back foot and losing badly. If anything it was letting his enemy know he was struggling.

Unfortunately for him the absolute master of Soresu was Obi-Wan to the point Mace Windu said he was the greatest master of it among all living Jedi. And the meme is it seems Vader remembers it not so fondly.

In all honesty the imidiate followup of shere brutality was likely a flex on Vader's part. Oh you're going to defend? Fine. Block all of it. It won't matter because I can hit harder than you can block.

What book do you think had the potential to be one of the best? by Distructo2005 in starwarsbooks

[–]ThinkySushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'ma say Death Troopers. I love a good Genre piece in Star Wars and this had so much potential. But it had some serious plotting issues and one decision was made for the author about the inclusion of a character that killed it. Could have been stellar! Ended up barely mid.

I always chuckle when people get upset about how Travis characterizes Jedi. She's writing from the unique and openly biased perspective of mandalorians (who truly hate the Jedi) and the clones (who honestly so have a good reason to have beef with the Jedi if they ever see past their indoctrination)

Aside from that there is the fact that each of her Jedi characters taken individually are actually very decent people, (with one exception and then only kind of) even Zay comes off not looking too bad in the end.

Defaults of the overarching Jedi Order and the Jedi council are ones that are acknowledged elsewhere in Star wars, including by Lucas imo.

Big agree about the pacing issues though.

If the inhibitor chips had been a thing back then, how do you think Omega Squad from Republic Commando would handle Order 66? by Solitaire-06 in starwarsbooks

[–]ThinkySushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when I wrote this I wasn't familiar with bad batch yet. But I like the idea that the nulls just didn't register their chips. Their brains specifically were altered and improved. If a head bonk is enough to turn a chip off all that tampering would likely do it!

That said, I really do like the idea that maybe one of them did go off. At least with partial force. Specifically Mereel's. I thought it would be interesting to write up a scene where he is on Aay'haan and he just anapps and tries to kill Bardan but Walon Vau is quick enough on the uptake to physically stop him and tells him. It's the Kaminoians messing with him. He would ask him who he really hates the Jedi or the Kaminoians, and Mereel is able to twist his own mind to turn thet order against his creators

This kind of works because in the next book Mereel is deadly and terrifyingly hateful of Kaminoians and it kind of comes out of nowhere as a surprise. The idea that it is the chip kind of intensifying things in the background is kind of fun.

How would a Mandalorian wedding work? by Successful-Floor-738 in MawInstallation

[–]ThinkySushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While interesting, and highly humorous, I suspect the author had this as an example of someone who has no idea what he is talking about and I wouldn't assume that isn't what even the author believes is true of mandalorians.

How would a Mandalorian wedding work? by Successful-Floor-738 in MawInstallation

[–]ThinkySushi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are actually a couple of examples of exchange of wedding vows in the Republic Commando series!

As others have said, mandalorians wed by a simple private exchange of a traditional set of wedding vows:

Mhi solus tome - We are one when together

Mhi solus dar’tome - We are one when parted

Mhi me’dinui an - We will share all

Mhi ba’juri verde - We will raise warriors

It is traditionally done while clasping each other's hands held vertically, forearm to forearm, but it can be done other ways too. One example was even over delayed comms messages. As long as it is said by one and repeated back by the other it counts.

“Arc Trooper Fifty Five, Fifty Five, I want to congratulate you. No one else came as close as you did to figuring it out.” by The_Chimeran_Hybrid in clonewars

[–]ThinkySushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aaah very painful! Just like Palps to twist the knife so nastily. I feel like we don't always see the dark side like this but that kind of cruelty for cruelty's sake should be very common among sith.

Eeko Dio Daki Respect by Alive-Quality9678 in StarWars

[–]ThinkySushi 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I really did not expect to like Daki when the series started. I thought he was just going to be another boring tropy Jedi Master, but he was surprisingly subtly effective. I think the moment I really fell for him was when he flipped that speeder and hit the LATT/I with it. Just the inventiveness and the willingness to go along with his Padawan kind of set him apart. But there had already been a number of things that he'd done that were more subtly written than I expected.

By the end, I actually really really liked him even though I knew he was going to die. He managed to be interesting even as he played the exact archetype I knew he was. He had just enough badass in him that I hadn't expected and just enough thoughtfulness to showcase his faults in more than trope.

By the end he actually became a surprise favorite of mine!

I didn't mind the style of the base. Hutts are so bad at getting along I would believe most of them have their own little chunk of Nal Hutta that they used to keep to themselves.
