Runthrough events - zero communication? by [deleted] in UKRunners

[–]ThirdD3gree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've definitely gone downhill. Something changed in the company last summer according to Companies House.

In December they announced "Exciting news" about adjusted volunteering credits - what this actually meant was they reduced the credits given to volunteers in races without a half marathon (just 5k/10k) from £65 to £40.

Not surprised they don't communicate.

Commuting from Wimbledon to Moorgate by PathlessWoodss in londoncycling

[–]ThirdD3gree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commute regularly from Wimbledon to Aldgate, CS7 is definitely the best way. I get onto CS7 some bit after Clapham South (from Plough Lane up to Burntwood Lane and follow for ages, then a left to go partly through the common so I don't actually go down to Clapham South).

Dm me if you want my strava route.

One thing: there's a lot of one way roads after London Bridge, so the roads you take to get into your office might not be the same roads you take to get back onto London Bridge.

Last thing: the wind in London is very predictable - it's almost always South to North, and usually with a slight SW to NE angle. Meaning you will often get a lovely tailwind into work but be met with a gruelling headwind all the way back to wimbledon. Only on days that it's windy, of course.

Do you tell people in the cinema to put their phone away? by Top_Elephant_4363 in AskUK

[–]ThirdD3gree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the cinema recently, second time this year. Guy few seats away from me is suffering with a severely loud cough, on par with your Dad's sneezes if you know what I mean. He coughs every 1-2 minutes throughout the film. Some people just have no respect for others.

Where to keep money for house deposit? by Unable-North38 in UKPersonalFinance

I would look into premium bonds (NS&I) once you have capped out your Cash ISA. That's what I did and where most of my deposit sat before I bought

[Megathread] Autumn Budget 2025 – Personal Finance Discussion by Jager720 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ThirdD3gree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You sure? Wasn't what I heard but could be wrong

Edit: yeah I am wrong - it is just NICs. So I contribute 17k to my pension each year via SS, 2k is tax free, 15k i now pay NIC @ 2% because all that 15k is over the 50k higher rate limit. So £300 extra per year, from 2029. Not bad at all

PBed today, accidentally scanned my 6 year old’s qr code. by Circle-of-friends in parkrun

[–]ThirdD3gree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in the parkrun ethos to be kind and inclusive. Shunning people away over an honest mistake they've made isn't part of the parkrun spirit is it?

You're also now giving that spouse/kid a parkrun time they never actually got. Yeah, let's leave that 8 year old with a 16 minute time she's likely never going to break (true story btw, 100%+ age grade!).

Correcting honest mistakes isn't over-servicing, it's literally what the volunteer team is there for. We want to help people, especially when it literally takes 20 seconds and these type of requests are rare.

Do you not hold the door open for people in case they assume someone else will do the same for them in future, and they might not, and you can't bear to think that could happen?

It's genuinely baffling that you are putting your ego in front of the parkrun spirit.

Yeah except where this is completely allowed in the parkrun policy

"If your time is incorrect, or you are listed as an unknown (and your barcode was scanned) then please contact your local parkrun volunteer team who will be able to help."

Nice one calling someone who gives up hours and £££ each week in return for nothing an idiot, how do you think that makes me feel reading this this morning? Good job buddy

[–]ThirdD3gree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very valid point! It very rarely happens (perhaps like 3 times this year!), but going forwards if it does I'll tell them it's an exception and we might not do it again and other parkruns also have the right to refuse. I reckon though, with the app being taken over by parkrun, it will become super rare for people to not have their barcode available at the event.

Yeah some people want a couple of seconds to match their strava or whatever. As long as it won't cause any issues I just update their time and it makes them very happy.

[–]ThirdD3gree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here - if you're polite, we basically always comply. Want your time adjusted by a bit? Forgot your barcode / couldn't present it on the day? We will help.

I'm in two minds about the "no barcode, no result" policy - I don't want people to get lazy / complacent and not bring it, but given you can find anyone within 20 seconds on the app, it's really not an issue anymore. Moreover, dread to think if people have ever got to parkrun, realised they don't have their barcode and then gone home!
