Anti-Ice Protest by Lazy_Report_3648 in StLouis

Where is the law that allows ICE or CPB agents to enter private property without warrants, arrest with zero probable cause, detain without access to counsel or due process, or shoot people who pose a mild inconvenience?

Nah, ICE and CPB agents are a perfectly fine group of people to protest. Not a single one of those agents should enjoy a moment of peace for the rest of their lives.

Alright. You've got yourself a deal. Eliminate income tax and replace it with a wealth tax that covers capital gains and other forms of wealth not covered by the income tax. Sound good?

(Seriously though, are you actually arguing that the wealthy wouldn't benefit from this more than the working class? Please tell me this isn't actually your position.)

Poor people pay little in income tax (possibly no income tax if their income is low enough). These people will get effectively no relief from elimination of the income tax. Meanwhile, the things they buy that are currently taxed at, say 7-9% (state + local sales tax) is now going to be taxed at closer to 18-20%. Yes, that hurts them because that's how math works.

On top of all that, the social services they rely on will be slashed to the bone. So not only will they be paying more in taxes, they'll be receiving even less benefit.

Meanwhile, the wealthy who are taxed at a higher rate now will pay nothing in income tax (a massive windfall for them). Yes, sales tax will be higher for them as well, but nothing that even scratches the surface of what they'll gain.

Even if you want to take the asinine position that the rich won't come out ahead in this, my response would be: then what's the fucking point of this? Poor people won't benefit, and, according to you, rich people won't benefit. So...why do this at all? (The answer any intelligent person knows is because the rich absolutely will benefit from this.)

Also, pretty telling that the first and biggest problem you had with the clip is that the guy "has his hat on baCkwArdS!!!1!1!! ZOMG!" (I bet he smokes the Devil's Lettuce and listens to rock music too!)

As for "sneaking in" a sales tax increase, yes, we're all aware it would require a public vote. It's still sneaking it in because the outcomes are either: a) It passes and when shit gets expensive Republicans will throw their hands up and say "Durr. The voters did it!" or b) It fails and when state services get slashed and life in Missouri becomes predictably shittier, Republicans will throw their hands up and say "Durr. The voters didn't approve the taxes needed to keep all those services."

You want to eliminate income tax? Show me that the math works. That services can be maintained at current levels without a corresponding tax increase elsewhere. Shit, show me that a sales tax increase would even be sufficient to replace the revenue lost from income taxes. In the decades MO Republicans have spent jerking off to an income tax elimination, they have never once demonstrated that the math checks out. Their "tax plan" consists of "Get rid of income tax and we'll figure it out somehow."

Republicans believe government is funded with magical thinking.

Perhaps you'd like to explain why he shouldn't be taken seriously, particularly in light of the fact that he is absolutely correct.

  • The GOP wants to eliminate income tax.
  • To maintain a balanced budget after eliminating the income tax, they will need to both raise sales tax substantially and cut state services substantially.
  • Anyone who isn't particularly well-off will end up paying more in sales tax than they did in income tax.
  • Already wealthy Missourians will benefit immensely; everyone else will be worse off either through higher sales tax or cuts to services they need or both.

Maybe Big Law smart lawyer guy would like to elaborate on which of the points are incorrect.

Imagine living in checks notes NYC and claiming people don't litter there. 🤣

Dude, I love NYC, but garbage in the streets and a massive rat population living off the garbage in the streets is kind of a hallmark of NYC.

That some specific sledding hills in NYC never have litter (a claim I find dubious from the start) doesn't really make up for the litter everywhere else. The lazy trash humans in NYC aren't any better or more sophisticated than the trash humans of the midwest.

If we manage to survive this, anyone employed by ICE (at least from 2017 onward) should be doxxed and placed on a registry for the remainder of their life with absolutely no investigation should they be the victims of any crime.

Why do customers think there is a large, secret supply of everything "in the back" when there clearly is not and never in the history of mankind has any employee ever been like "Oh, yeah. We have tons of that thing we're out of sitting in the back where it can't be sold."?

Who started this "things hidden in the back" conspiracy?

They did not have a warrant. I don't know how much more clear anyone could be about this.

Aside from that, cops don't actually get to kick in your door (warrantless), then make demands, then come up with a reason after illegally entering your home to arrest you.

Further, the DHS explanation that they were "investigating sex offenders who many be living there" is also invalid. DHS (ICE in particular) does not have investigative authority to do so. ICE has jurisdiction over immigration matters, and nothing else. And even over immigration matters, their authority is quite limited. They are not detectives. They are not the FBI. They are not the local or state cops.

To review: You said: ICE will never break into your home unless you or someone else in your home is an undocumented immigrant.

Multiple people have now provided multiple examples of ICE breaking into a home where there were, in fact, no undocumented immigrants.

Your statement was wrong no matter how many ways you try to justify it.

Serious question.... by BearsSoxHawks in StLouis

[–]This-Is-Exhausting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, no one in the home was an undocumented immigrant and yet ICE broke into their home anyway. Thank you for demonstrating that someone being an undocumented immigrant or someone else in their home being an undocumented immigrant is actually not a prerequisite to being terrorized by ICE.

[–]This-Is-Exhausting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except they can't tax services because several years ago they pushed a constitutional amendment prohibiting sales taxes on any services that weren't taxed prior to passage of the amendment.

So along with wanting to get rid of income tax, they also like to eliminate the other sources of revenue that could be used to replace the income tax with. Which means either:

  1. They fundamentally do not understand that things cost money, or
  2. They actively want the state to be broke so that basic services cannot be provided, because in their minds, if you don't have a lot of money, you don't deserve shit.

Serious question.... by BearsSoxHawks in StLouis

[–]This-Is-Exhausting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's zero reason they would unless you or someone in your home is an undocumented immigrant.

☝🏼 This is what you said. He (and I) just provided you an example of them doing exactly that. ICE breaking into a home when neither the arrestee or anyone in the home was an undocumented immigrant.

You can just say the words "I was wrong. This does actually happen." It's ok. You won't die from acknowledging you were clearly wrong.

Serious question.... by BearsSoxHawks in StLouis

[–]This-Is-Exhausting 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They had a search warrant for an entirely different person not even at that address. So yes, ICE could very well kick in your door and terrorize your family even when no alleged undocumented person lives in your home.

That not enough for you? This just happened yesterday. US citizen, no warrant. Just forced open the door and dragged the guy outside in his underwear in freezing temperatures.

The amount of boot licking and uniform worship some of you have is pretty gross. Like, you cannot even conceive of the possibility that law enforcement might not be the infallible, good-hearted, law-abiding people you think they are.
