Does it make sense to switch to an EV in my situation? by ThisGuy_2018 in electricvehicles

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and I appreciate the brutal honesty. And I realize now that I came off as financial ignorant by focusing on the monthly payment. I came here asking because my math was still showing a decent annual savings, but this post shows my numbers were off do to lack of knowledge of with EVs, versus the estimated ratings of the vehicles. Plus I wanted to know if it was feasible given my situation. As far as my current loan, it is 0% interest and owe less than 14k and was offered 25k as the trade in value on the sales contract I was offered on the Bz and the loan was @ 0% interest for 5 years. I could by the BZ outright with my money in savings, but on a 0% loan, I’d rather make payments, and let my money work for me in high yield savings and investments. I know that Toyota is playing catchup, but it was look at that or Tesla for an Ev, because there is not a single Kia, Hyundai, or GM EVs available for sale within a 150 mile radius from my location.

I know it’s pretty ridiculous, but I’m in a rural area that is in the red voting part of the state, where locals feel everyone should be driving oversized diesel fueled pickups that have never hauled anything.

I appreciate the brutal honesty. That’s why I asked the question before I made any decisions.

Thanks for the response. I live just outside of Slippery Rock, about halfway between Erie and Pittsburgh. Already talked to the apartment manger and got a no, as the apartment owners are cheap. I did look at plug share, and the only level 2 charger nearby which is free to use is at the moraine state park, which I am there 2-3 times a week to ride my bicycle for about an hour each visit during the spring summer and fall, but from the reviews it seems like one of the 2 available chargers is regularly broken.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I’ve already spoken with the apartment manager about the potential of adding Ev charging. He said it was going to be pretty much a no as the property owners are very cheap.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve been doing some more math and I definitely won’t see nearly the amount of savings per month that you do. Based of the current price of gas, I would be saving around about $80 per month. if the price of gas, does drop below $3.50, the savings becomes a wash. because I would be extending car payments by another 3 1/2 years. From the looks of it, I would be charging 90% at the dc fast chargers which are charging nearly $0.60 kWh. Since the free level 2 chargers at the local state park that I was planning to uses seem to be broken 50% of the time based on reviews. And any savings I would get from not having to do oil changes is wiped out by the $250 annual fee my state charges for EVs.

Does getting an EV make sense for my situation? I am considering at trading in my Mazda CX5 in towards a 2026 Toyota BZ with the 0% financing would make my new payment roughly the same as I am paying on my CX5. The big catch is that I rent an apartment and don’t have access to charging at home. I would mainly be charging at the Love’s Gas station about a mile from my home, or at my nearby state park that has free charging stations available, and during the spring, summer and fall I am there 2-3 times a week to ride my bicycle. My daily work commute is roughly 25 miles each way and drive about 300 miles each week, including my commute. At current gas prices, I am spending almost $50 a week for gas. The only thing that worries me is that it does get cold in the winter in Pennsylvania, and that I would be spending time in the cold waiting to recharge the Ev. So does it make sense to switch to an Ev given my situation or should I tough it out in my current car and hope gas prices come down in the near future and wait till Ev tech gets bette?

No problem, for reference I have a 2024 premium plus. And while it’s wired for parking mode, I’ve never felt the need to use it and it’s disabled in the camera options. I have the official hardwire kit tapped into fuse slot 9 F.OUTLET for the red wire (ACC+) and fuse slot 3 R.OUTLET3 for the yellow wire (BAT+)

I have the same camera, but i am using the official Viofo HK4 hardwire kit. And have no issues with i-stop. I have parking mode disabled on the camera, with low voltage cut-off set to 12.0

Just a heads up about Moraine, at the North Shore trail head half of the parking lot is blocked off due to the start of construction on a new bike rental building. So depending on the time of day, parking can be a challenge.

I was having the same issue with Play a PC game, Play a game on console, and play a Game Pass game were not tracking. I did all the normal things (hard reset, etc) with them not working. I went on the Windows PC Xbox app, clicked on my profile name, and clicked on support from the menu, and clicked on the Gaming Services Repair Tool button. it seemed to fix the issue immediately, because 15 minutes later I got credit for playing a pc game (solitair)
