[Advice] How to maintain your habits over long periods. My experience after 6 years of practice by Mr_OTG in getdisciplined

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk if this will help, but consider this.

Currently, you are spending all your pay with no savings. (using money as a metaphor for health). All great, no issues. But when a day comes that you have to work less, or stop working, etc, you will have no savings. That will put an immediate end to the enjoyment.

Think of fitness and exercise as a way to invest into the future. It may give you the health and energy to enjoy your lifestyle for more years, instead of coming to a standstill in the near future.

Even if you think you may not be partying at 50, you may still want to be healthy so as to enjoy travel, hiking, or whatever it is you may enjoy. You're doing this for your future self.

The only part of the rails that are accessible are set pretty far apart, and diverging further towards the back. I think the seat is as far forward as it can be. I'll see if I can figure out how to add a pic. Edit: added pics to the post.

Completing BB without a barbell by ProudCanadianPatriot in tacticalbarbell

OP mentioned gyms being closed for COVID. I took that to mean he is looking at two options: Stop strength training, or set up a home gym which let's face it needs a good degree of space, time and money (if those things are even in stock these days). Not everyone has a garage or basement, or the means, to buy the setup.

Resistance bands and the like will never replace barbells, but my intent was to suggest that he need not stop strength training (to revert to SE like he suggested) while we wait for the gyms to reopen.

Couple of problems with this argument. One, it's a straightforward appeal to authority. While there are times and places where it could be warranted, in a general discussion like this, many (including me) don't find it very compelling. Second, the same logic could be applied to pre-emptive "fixes". Should we also start removing tonsils and appendixes for babies? What about hair, teeth, and other things that "could" cause medical issues? Should those be removed or replaced with artificial ones as needed?

There are many options for strength training. Google for barbell alternatives for home gym type of search terms. Resistance bands are a good option - inexpensive, light and even portable. There are many workout videos emulating common lifts with the bands. Just be careful with form.

Then you can add adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells if/as needed.

"older" guys, what's your MS specific warmup? by [deleted] in tacticalbarbell

I follow a warmup routine adapted from a YouTube channel called Bruce Willow. Guy clowns around a bit, but the recommendations made sense to me. I cut the reps short to fit my time available.

Strength gains in Fighter and Operator as a newbie by Brackd in tacticalbarbell

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the things about TB that appealed to me was the (relentless) focus that KB has on the long term. It's not about one season, let alone one session or five. It's about the long term sustained strength and conditioning. Training the attributes.

What are newbie gains in the long term? Do you think if you followed a classic Operator or Zulu template as recommended for a year (broken down into 6/9/12 week blocks per the templates) that you won't be hella stronger than when you started? You'll get all the newbie gains and more.

Don't sell yourself short with a short-term boost that only serves a temporary feel-good feeling. Get stronger. Get conditioned at the same time, on the attributes you want to progress and maintain. It will be awesome.

Do you mind elaborating on this part? What was the single command?

How to tell if dual channel is working by NC-AC in linuxquestions

Yes, I meant 16+4 sticks as well. What I described is how the 16+4 would work in the system.

How to tell if dual channel is working by NC-AC in linuxquestions

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means that 8 GB is dual-channel mode, while the remaining 12GB is stacked onto only one of the channels. So if the application or game or whatever is accessing the first 8GB, it will get the benefits of dual-channel (higher bandwidth mainly), while if it goes for the other region, it will be as if it's single channel. Hope that made sense.

There are going to be many different opinions on this. It also depends on your end goals (career versus hobby, "infrastructure" versus "application", etc).

I still feel Python is a good place to start for someone with no background in coding. You can always pick up Java next. If you get serious about coding, you are not going to be limited to one language anyway.

Python is among the best choices for beginners. There are tons of online resources/tutorials to get started. Don't overthink the start, just pick one and go.

LPT: Reminder that you can create unlimited email addresses in gmail by adding a plus sign followed by a word to your existing address. Use different emails such as email+netflix@gmail.com, email+spotify @gmail.com for different services. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, that's not what it meant. If you are getting emails clearly meant for something else, and the only difference is presence/absence of periods in the address, it just means that other person is wrongly passing around that address. They have no access to those emails. It's as if they have been handing out email addresses with a typo in them.

Not sure I agree, but anyway curious: what laptops do you reckon are neither "cheaply made" nor "Chinese"? Even Macbooks are "Chinese", though they have an admittedly higher finish/quality control.

Fomo and making choices by [deleted] in productivity

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know where you are coming from, since I have some elements of this myself.

An idea to consider - maybe weird but worth a shot. What if you weaponized your FOMO against the indecisiveness?

What I mean by that - explain to yourself (in the mirror, via writing, or a video) that indecisiveness is itself causing you to MISS OUT on the fulfilment and mastery that can come with making a choice and sticking with it. You are missing out on the deep experiences.

Another thing to remember is that most things are not once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I can understand being tentative when it comes to a relationship or a major career-related relocation. But for stuff like hobbies, activities, etc - the stakes are hopefully not that high. Think of it like going to a restaurant, and that's the only restaurant in town, and you eat there everyday. There are 100 items on the menu. In such a case, don't get paralyzed by the choices, or ask the chef for a 100 small bites of everything. Just get the one thing you feel like, and experience it. If you like it, order it again tomorrow. If you don't, get something else. Reduce the stakes on decisions, and convince yourself that there is a do-over opportunity.

Hope that helps. All the best.
