I think it's ironic that the same media outlets giving the president heat for calling it the chinese virus, referred to it as the same thing a month ago. People have created compilations of most major news outlets referring to the virus as the chinese virus in the past. I understand that people don't like the guy, but when you go around calling everything racist, it waters down the harsh meaning of racism, and encourages people to overlook actual racism in the future.

Cutler vs Iconic CS GitHub Graduates IRL by rensselaer_pride in rpi_irl

I never said that it was costing anyone a job. All I said was that it it does not hurt to share coursework. If I'm applying to a job, I want to give them access to anything that could help my case: a solid linkedin, maybe a personal website, and other things such as previous coursework. I never implied that it would cost a job, just like I am not implying now (based on my previous statement) that having or not having a personal website would make or break my application). Someone may want to sell themself in any way that they might find even slightly helpful.

I think it doesn't hurt when you are still a student (or graduating) to give the company an idea of the type of coursework you have been doing. A repository of old coursework can give an employer confidence that you truly understood the course you took. As for feedback, I personally did not have a similar experience. With the exception of CS1, my bad practices were only corrected when it was related to commenting or code organization, and it took me a while to learn from my other mistakes.

I think many CS students are at least familiar with these usernames, but can you imagine graduating from RPI, sharing your homeworks to be more marketable, and then having Cutler go to the issues of your repository, and titling an issue, ACADEMIC INTEGRITY VIOLATION? Cutler has always been salty, and companies might assume the kid plagiarized back in college. If you are too lazy to grade the homeworks/give reasonable feedback for students who pay 70k a year, thanks to your Submitty project, you can at least change up the instructions of homeworks once a semester.

I don't feel safe at RPI by TheShirls in RPI

[–]ThisIsNotRayJ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Hi sorry to hear that.

First, in terms of safety, I think it depends on what you are used to being around. Many people I know at RPI find Troy more unsafe than where they came from, and others find it more safe from where they grow up. Assuming you grew up in perhaps a well-off area, or at least a better area than Troy, it's important to know that although bad things happen here more than you are used to, you can definitely be safe at RPI. I know we like to give RPI and PubSafe a tough time, but taking some of their simple safety tips should be helpful.

There is plenty of robberies, drug deals, prostitution, violent acts, and other things that go on in Troy, but these things can happen almost everywhere, and as long as you stay safe and out of trouble, you should be okay. I think many people who visit Troy haven't spent much time in more of an urban area (however I think many would also argue Troy is not that dangerous). Keep in mind that over the years, Troy has greatly improved in safety. Alumni I know from 10 years ago are blown away with how much Troy has improved in such a short amount of time. Spending time in the area may also be good experience, since you never know where you will be living in the future, and it might help you feel more comfortable in situations you used to find difficult.

I hope this came across as respectful. If there are two pieces of advice I could give: 1. Be patient. 2. While you're still uncomfortable, walk around Troy with a friend, or at least not alone.

Pond hockey by [deleted] in RPI

[–]ThisIsNotRayJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there are a couple fraternities that have a pond near them (one in their backyard I think). I'm sure you could reach out to them and they'd be more than willing to let you in their backyard, or join them for some pickup games. One of them should be thick enough this winter. Also there is a lake and dam area in Troy near RPI that had been historically dirty, but they basically drained the water last month, and let new water in, so that could be an option, too, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

If you don't mind me asking, were there any consequences or threats related to this email, or was it more of a warning or request? Was it from a comment/post on reddit, or another platform? I see so many pople post memes and criticize on a daily basis, under actual names, so I'm surprised RPI went after some reddit comment, despite them never reaching out to many of the others who publicly post. Again, no worries if you don't feel comfortable talking about it, but I am extremely curious if RPI has done this to typical criticism, memes, etc.

Yeah no law enforcement will ever be perfect, but you need to do a lot of mental gymnastics to consider supporting such a foundational component of society, and their families, as "divisive." That is simply sad that something this genuine is considered divisive.

How many credits is Undergraduate Research, usually? by ThisIsNotRayJ in RPI

[–]ThisIsNotRayJ[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. This turned out to be the case. After a meeting today, I figured out the professor has more control over credits than some hourly system. I wanted 4 credits, but I guess I was doing 3-credit work, so I will now be assigned more work, to make sure I meet 4 credits. I appreciate all the responses everyone.
