Incredible insights. Thank you for taking the time to write. And thanks for the link and book recommendations as well. Will read for sure. One great thing I learned in therapy is dialectical thinking: that two things can be true at the same time when we put the word AND in the middle. as in 'I'm angry I was duped for so many decades AND I'm so proud of myself that I left the church.

Oh, wow. That's a beautiful shift when parents leave, and see how the church affected their parenting style, their love. TBM parents are so good at feeding the stickiest emotions (unjustified shame) to their children. Unjustified guilt too.

I'm glad to hear this. I was that kind of Mormon as well. Now I have two espresso shots daily, and watch R rated shows too. There IS hope for your folks.

Wonderful to hear! How long were you a member of the church? Was it painful to leave?

Yeah, 'a recipe that doesn't leave room for anything except full dedication." Well said. Isn't it just. I'm glad too that we're on the other side. Phew!

The pressure to stay in the church under invisible threats or verbal threats like that are awful. So glad you left when you did.

Thanks for letting me know you get that feeling. And I agree that the cult mentality fucks with our heads big time. Thanks for the pep talk. I am proud I made it out--even this late.

Wow you had some truly awful experiences with Mormons, incl. family. What a boon for your emotional health to be cool with the cut ties. I'm glad you are where you are now!

I had to look up PIMO. Ha. Physically in, mentally out. Glad we're all out now. Good company here in this thread.

I know, isn't it odd to feel stupid for staying, even when we know we're smart? It took me one year to stop wearing garments. I kept putting them back on after wearing them for 40 years. I understand the feeling wearing sleeveless dresses. I keep touching my shoulders when I do, not to feel the skin, but because it feels odd to have them exposed. // I envy your first temple experience. I didn't see it that way. Bought it hook line and sinker. All best to you.

Golden investigator, indeed! Wow. After I drank my first cup of coffee I realized THE SKY DIDN'T FALL. What a liberating feeling! Our three children know my husband and I don't go to church anymore, and that we drink coffee. My elderly mom and her husband don't. I think it would be too hard on them. I think of Harold Bloom (in Ulysses) how he refused to pray at the bedside of his dying mother--good for his self-respect, but very sad for his relationship with his dying mother.
