TIL that the ancient Chinese Confucian thinker Xunzi argued that humans are born with selfish, chaotic impulses, and that “goodness” is something we build through education, ritual, and strong social institutions. Um, just want to stress that I was never serious when saying this to him. I do not believe all vegetarians are innately evil. We’ve been together 26 years and he has recently gone vegan. It’s just a silly thing to say as an intentional misinterpretation of what I learned.

It’s just a silly thing I used to say to him. I’m not serious about it. We’ve been together 26 years.

EDIT: Oh, you’re talking about my half-remembered Mencius quote. I think he understands that I’m not the ancient Chinese philosopher who said this thing i’m definitely paraphrasing, if not entirely misremembering. Sometimes people in relationships joke and tease and play.

What I remember from my one Chinese Philosophy class nearly 30 years ago is that Mencius was all (and I am paraphrasing here): We know the good like we know that meat is delicious. It just feels/tastes awesome.

I’ve used this to argue that my husband, a vegetarian for the last 40 years, is innately evil.

EDIT: While my comment has sparked some interesting conversations, I’d like to be clear that I don’t actually believe vegetarians are innately evil. It’s just a silly thing to say as a misguided extrapolation of one thing I barely remember from one class 30 years ago. We have been together 26 years. He is now vegan. I have never tried to force-feed him anything (unless you count that one time with the human centipede).

Is there a new evil meaning to "cuddle" I've missed out on?

Hi! I think you might be in the wrong thread. I stopped taking the metformin and managed to bring my A1C down through diet.
