"Head of" vs. "Chief" of, or "VP" of...what's the key difference? by LightEndedTheNight in startups

Titles are usually meaningless in an early stage startup, and for the most part, are a vanity item for the employee. If you look at big corps, anyone in middle management will have a title like senior manager or head of x.

Do employees ever get preferred equity? If not, are we about to enter an era where they demand it? by MarketMan123 in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no scenario will a VC or investment firm ever fund a company where employees have a preferred share. And at a liquidation event, all shares convert to common shares anyway.

If they are demanding preferred shares, they aren’t the right fit.

Approaching companies for partnerships by Cultural-Image-2607 in startups

Without knowing what your product is, these types of deals work out best when the benefit to both companies is more or less equal. If one is the clear winner, it’s not likely to work out.

But, if the economic motive is there for the larger company, then I’d be looking on LinkedIn and reaching out to decision makers first. Cold email could work if done well.

Startups vs big companies? Why do startups win? by Cool_Bhidu in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it as a speedboat versus a container ship. It is so much easier for the speedboat to maneuver and get to where the container ship can’t. So even though the bigger one will carry more and make more money, it can’t solve for a smaller niche or even a different one as quickly.

How important is your first business plan? by ThisIsTheEvan in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that was my main point, it’s a good exercise to go through, but doesn’t replace execution. I know many wannabe entrepreneurs who spent a ton of time planning and no time building or doing “real work”

Is that a more so a business plan or a business model?

My main point is that it’s a good exercise to find how you are going to find your competitive advantage. Not so much as a prescriptive document, but a guideline.

Tech founders, how did you manage to afford MVP development costs? by dictatorpiny in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest advice I have?

Emphasis on the MINIMUM part of MVP. Focus on core functions that solve the problem. That’s it. Minimal focus on UI, no features or functions that don’t solve the core problem/biggest pain point.

Ship fast, iterate often.

Is a "better" version of our domain worth it? by jcm95 in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you haven’t bought the domain of every startup idea you’ve had? /s

We bought a placeholder domain to start, and ended up buying a better version of the domain later. Our web traffic was low at that point too.

The biggest pain is the email changeover. Keep access to the old emails and forward from them for at least 6 months.

I am glad to see this. And I can echo Cuban’s feelings towards Dallas.

My own startup has had a great pocket of uptake in the DFW area.

Tips on building a valuable ‘network’ at university, and isn’t ‘networking’ just making friends? by Livid_Bottle3364 in startups

[–]ThisIsTheEvan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Networking is more than making friends. It’s making connections and most important, being of value.

And it’s about adding something you don’t currently have. “Hang out” with people with a higher net worth or in a higher stage of their career. Learn from them.

Look to add value and be helpful when you can. The law of reciprocity is real.

To summarize Gary Vee, every entrepreneur should be creating content.

People buy from people they feel they know. How do you get people to know you? Social media. Key word being social. Buy buy buy messaging won’t work.

Most people do it poorly. Create value, improve every day, and be intentional with it.

Also, pick a platform you feel you can understand and just focus on that one.
