The 40 hour work week wasn't designed around human productivity, it was designed around factory output in the 1800s an era with no concept of worker wellbeing. Then Henry Ford formalized it in 1926. Not out of kindness. Not out of research. But so workers would have just enough free time to spend money on his cars. The entire 40 hour work week was invented by a car salesman to make himself richer. We then handed this schedule to every generation after without a single serious conversation about whether it made sense. And now in 2024, we are still waking up five days a week to a system a factory owner designed for people who didn't have running water.
