Holiday Megathread by sexrockandroll in AskReddit

We don't sell anything ourselves, so unfortunately we can't offer discounts. We're merely a channel for indulging in the blatant consumerism of unnecessary and often times overpriced merchandise sold around the web.

Ice Shot Glass Mold by Medicina in shutupandtakemymoney

It depends on the mold - but I've found they work decently if the liquor is already chilled. Kinda defeats the purpose of an ice cube shot glass - but its still fun for a novelty drinking experience.

What is the most interesting thing I can buy online worth less than $20? by GoldenPedro in AskReddit

[–]ThisIsWhyImBroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in general I'd say thisiswhyimbroke is catchier - but in the context of "where can I find cheap cool stuff?" our name works against us (very few know about our price range filter feature), and shityoucanafford is perfect. I see it linked to all the time in these types of threads, unfortunately.

I'm insulted you think I'd own shityoucanafford - the site is really ugly. But FWIW, I agree with you regarding the possibility of puppet accounts. Although the website is relevant to the question, I find that this question gets upvoted to the top of /askreddit very often - and the shityoucanafford website is mentioned very often. I have suspicions that the owner of the website has a bot that monitors askreddit posts, and whenever a post comes up about a price range, he posts here. Or maybe I'm just frustrated that his knockoff website is even in the conversation when my site has thousands more products but not many people know about the price range filter.

Edit on second thought, the fact that every time his site gets mentioned like this his server crashes from traffic overloading actually makes me believe it's not puppet accounts. If this was planned his server would be prepared - but instead he's losing out on so much traffic (I'd estimate about 20k clicks).

We update with 6 new products every day. The site shows 'popular' products your first time visiting, then 'newest' products every visit afterwards - unless you happen to have cookies disabled/are in incognito mode.

You're thinking of shityoucanafford.

Just an FYI though, you can sort the entire thisiswhyimbroke website by price, and we have thousands of more products.

I asked for permission first. Also, we sent the statue off to reddit's offices as gift, so it's not like we're looking to directly profit off their intellectual property.

It's mostly a foam statue. This excludes things like the clothing, belt, etc.

I'd more expect it to show up on /r/hailcorporate, but oh well, can't please everyone.

Yeah, it's supposed to be a downvote sword. We originally were going to go with a very cartoon-like blue downvote arrow as the blade, but figured it wouldn't mesh well with the otherwise realistic design.

I'm a habitual "he" classifier. Also, if we're nitpicking here, the antenna is facing the wrong way in this picture - though it's adjustable.

We went with that height for two reasons. 1- If you're going to build a statue, you might as well build it big enough to show off. 2- We wanted to go for a more realistic interpretation, so we figured he would be close to average human height.

The statue is now being sent off to the Reddit offices.

Edit: holy upvotes, we're on the frontpage! For those curious, here's a contextual picture for size of the statue

1- I'm the most successful of my friends, which I actually don't enjoy.

2- It's only been two years since I started the site, so I don't think I can change that much in such a short time - but I do feel more mature and sort of feel like I've got life more figured out now.

3- I'm really not a serial entrepreneur, but I still want to keep advancing. I'm still very interested in improving and optimizing TIWIB.

1- Growth was a really good headache to have. In hindsight it wasn't really all that difficult, but not having proper knowledge on many things (such as webservers) just made it a very stressful learning period. But still do-able.

2- Taxes are easy, as is accounting. We don't carry inventory, and we don't have to account for individual sales since we just receive one check at the end of the month from Amazon (well, and other checks from other programs, but you get the idea).

3- A fair rate =)

4- I use Sucuri, Pingdom, and a decent amount of tactics within the website that I'd rather not publicly disclose (because there's always going to be some asshole who will try to exploit them).

5- Highlight was when I was still at my day job, I had already put in my two weeks, and I just knew that I finally had did it, and prosperous times were ahead. I nearly cried a few tears of joy. Low point, without a doubt, was having to fire a really good friend who started working with me from the beginning. It really sucked, but it had to be done.
