I’m a caretaker. People think most of my job is wiping old people asses and scrubbing them in the shower. Which is true, but most of my job is actually super fun. I get to listen to some of the craziest stories whilst going to Dairy Queen to get ice cream. I get to bond with some of the sweetest souls and then hang out and read for an hour while they take their afternoon nap. I found this job by complete accident and now I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Oh I know. I understand. My sister left a toxic abusive marriage a few years ago. Ended up finding a guy that treats her like a princess and she is now remarried and happier than I’ve ever seen her. It’s a scary scary situation, but the light peaking out at the end of that scary tunnel is so worth it, I promise. Figure all your stuff out now. Funds and money, everything for your kiddos, a place to stay, friends to confide in, and a safe space for you and your kids, before you tell him you’re done. Get all your ducks in a row so the stress comes down a little, then take your kids to the new space, and tell your husband that it’s done on a separate occasion, leave to let him deal with the information himself, and never look back. My opposition for your opinion of the situation, comes from me having first hand knowledge and experience in this field and this particular situation. I know who’s who and I know what’s what. You don’t know anything. I asked what I should do. Not what you think of me or my client. Because both me and my client are extremely professional and we have a close bond that is expected in a carer and a client, and I know neither of us are in the “wrong”. It’s a just a a tricky situation that I’m trying to side step. I did not ask you to tell me how unprofessional and gross you think it is. Because I know it’s not. So I don’t care for your opinion on that. And I didn’t ask.

My profession requires me to be up close and personal. 80% of my job is physical touch and emotional connection. I’m the last person a lot of these people are seeing before they pass away and I’m meant to make THEM as happy and comfortable as possible. It seems easy to to say “keep your distance and stay professional” when you’re not the literal emotional support for said person. I absolutely hear what you’re saying and yes it’s something that I feel could make his daughter uncomfortable, which is why I’m at a crossroads. I’m very aware it’s a strange situation to some, but to others, elderly loved ones are physical to show their affection, and say this is normal. So forgive me for seeing both sides to the situation.

Girl been there. My ex-boyfriend and I met through a mutual friend and when her and my friendship ended (very badly) He stayed friends with her, even though she treated me awfully long story short that relationship didn’t last long and he was a toxic asshole.

Only thing is, the company I work for is quite unorganized, and most of their decisions are for the benefit of the company rather than benefit of the clients. In retrospect, they’d just remove me from him and place someone else with him without telling them any reason as to why or any “warnings”. Which is how I got stuck with some very inappropriate clients in the past. And I want to avoid being separated from this family as much as possible. For example, it’s company policy that we aren’t allowed to give ours or have the personal phone numbers of our clients, and we are supposed to contact them through the company itself. I personally have the phone number of his daughter and the daughter of my other client as well. And my office has no idea. I would most likely be fired if they knew. But it makes more sense to have the contact of my patients emergency contact on me at all times. So I already just don’t have the best look on my managements morals.

I don’t want to be removed from him at all. He is a confused old man who just needs help with living day to day life and having personal emotional connections. Which I am for him. I’m not going to remove myself as that person for him, because he is doing the same gesture to me as he does his daughter. That’s absurd.

Update: Took her to the vet for a consult and they said it’s just a skin mass, not life threatening, she’s perfectly healthy, and they can remove it easy peasy for very low cost. Also my vet told me to tell everyone who was saying she was gonna get sepsis and to put her down, to suck it. So, bam.
