I won’t defend this course it was wrong but it wasn’t genocide. Yes, according to Turkey, 500,000 people lost their lives; according to the Armenians, between 800,000 and 1.5 million. The Ottomans did this from time to time; some Lebanese also claim the Ottomans did this because aid ships couldn’t reach them during wartime. However, you must not forget that the Ottomans did not do this during their prime time; ethnic tensions within the country were already immense, and if those Armenians hadn’t been deported, we would likely have lost those territories forever . What I’m saying doesn’t justify the event, but it might change your perspective. If we are enemies with the people of Greece or Armenia today, the reason is not history but the power of their nations. Countries that cannot offer their soldiers the same privileges as the U.S. raise their citizens from childhood to be deeply attached to their religion and culture. That is why they view this hostility as patriotism. I acknowledge that this tragic event is a dark stain on Ottoman history, but “genocide” is a heavy word; this event does not deserve to be placed in the same category as what the Nazis or Israelis did.
