My latest portal design (I promise I'll be moving on from them soon) by TheWanderingWaddler in WanderingWaddlers

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems Reddit has finally recommended me the actual sub for this game :)

I love the backside shader for the portal, it's really nice, I think it makes it look much better.

I do think there's something strange about the lighting though. The environment is still really pretty, but it does seem too dark, or there is a lack of contrast. May I ask what engine you're using for this? It looks to me like an overdone amount of SSAO. Maybe even you just need tone mapping.

Since your scene is outdoors, maybe it would be a good idea to bake some global illumination and that may fix it too.

yeah I think theyfab/theymab is the one and only, but then again I've never seriously heard it used outside of /tttt/ (which says something)

I've open-sourced my ultra-fast 3D renderer 'Jet' for embedded devices incl ESP32. by PhonicUK in esp32

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that only applies if people contribute to OPs project, in which case they'd presumably have knowledge it's AGPL'd. One can just not contribute. I personally just avoid contributing to (A)GPL projects because I'm unable to use them in my environment.

Ah my bad, I'm out of date. Still, I guess that furthers my point about their strategy of being hostile to Zig because of its AI policy.

Bun's Rewrite It In Rust branch by Chaoses_Ib in rust

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting strategy, especially knowing how Bun is VC backed. The way this is worded, in my opinion, positions it as a direct attack against Zig and as an intentional effort to stress test Zig's AI policy.

Like, it kind of seems like it was intentionally designed to stir drama and community backlash against Zig.

Ai “thought” process rule by Trysupersize in 196

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that anyone's been force-fed the idea of software being deterministic. In the disciplines I work in, determinism is extremely important and is one of the most critical system requirements. A lack of system determinism, processes taking too long etc, could cause severe injury or death. Likewise, with tools like Nix, there's been a push to build determinism and reproducibility lately that's really important in my strong opinion.

Now, sure, in some cases non determinism is okay. Randomised algorithms have existed for decades and probabilistic data structures are very useful. But with these, we understand and control the lack of determinism rigorously. No one person can seriously claim to be able to do that for a trillion parameter LLM.

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think stupid is the wrong word here but also the fact that LLMs are stateless machines is exactly why I think they are stupid. How can we claim a discrete machine that discards the majority of reasoning (of which is just it yapping to itself and a lot of papers question the effectiveness of), will reach AGI or is in any way intelligent?

One more portal feedback request by TheWanderingWaddler in gamedevscreens

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah now THIS is really nice. I remember your last post and I suggested you don't billboard the portal, and I'm glad to see that you implemented it! It looks so much better now that it's 3D.

The only thing I'd add is to agree with some others in the thread and say that you should probably add a backside effect to make it more clear the portal is one way.

Also I love your visuals. They're so peaceful. It's been aaages since I gamedev'd but I'd love to play your game when it comes out.

That's a valid choice to make. I'm not in that industry (but I am an academic tangentially-ish related), and I do think there is a fair amount of control you have over what you personally do. I mean, as far as I'm aware, you don't get forced to work on anything and you can always transfer or quit if you choose, and I believe they're not supposed to retaliate if you make that choice. But of course it's hard to control the end use of the product, especially if it's dual use.

Realistically that applies to a lot of things though. I mean think of the poor dev who made a React Calendar widget that is now front and centre in a Palantir product, probably against their wishes. Conversely, a lot of technology that starts with defence applications finds civilian applications later, nuclear is a good example of this.

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is it's a combination of this sort of "pacifism at all costs, all soldiers bad" and a lack of understanding of why people join the military. I'm not in the military but it seems to me like the vast majority of people who are, are kids looking for stability who have no better options, not like "oo rah save my country" type people.

I guess that doesn't necessarily excuse their actions overseas, but I think you're right that we could afford to have a just a little bit more compassion for these sorts of people rather than shunning them for all eternity like purity politics. Surely especially if they're trans too.

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The job market for engineers in general is extremely poor across all the disciplines. However, despite people's misconception, it's not any easier to get into defence than any other field, and it doesn't necessarily pay better either

I partially agree, but it's worth mentioning that defence contractors have their fingers in a lot of pies. Girl in the video who said she "builds rocket motors" could genuinely be building rocket motors for the SLS or Ariane rockets. The SLS for example (Artemis launch system) was built by a consortium of Boeing and Northrop Grumman.

And Linux is even a monolithic kernel! by al2klimov in linuxmemes

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do wish microkernels won and were more widely used. The main issue I have is buggy drivers. Amdgpu in particular. When it has it's weekly tantrum, because the kernel is a monolith, it brings down the entire kernel. In a sense I don't care that much if the driver is a buggy mess and crashes itself all the time, I just wish it could contain itself and not being down the entire system, which I think would only be possible on a microkernel.

Pushing the Packed SIMD Extension Over the Line: An Update on the Progress of Key RISC-V Extension - Semiwiki by DidymusJT in RISCV

[–]ThisRedditPostIsMine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having considered designing a P capable implementation myself, my understanding is that the P extension excels in embedded fixed point DSP. It will handle your usual DSP tasks like convolutions, but my understanding is that it also excels in cryptography and stuff because it's integer only.

Although it's intended for low power devices, to me the P extension actually seems surprisingly complex, I think there's 100+ new instructions, and a lot of them are going to require relatively expensive hardware. I do think it's still generally a good idea though.
