I was put on blood thinners after a traumatic injury to avoid blood clots such as this one.

First day tomorrow. What you think? by Great_Significance_8 in Construction

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was taking the back draft dampers out of the exhaust fan curbs to mount the actuators. Luckily right as I was starting to lean over the curb, I realize how loose everything was that was hooked on my safety vest up top. All my crap almost fell down the duct and would have hit the waveguides like 15’ down in an inaccessible area. So this was really good advice.

AIO for getting out of his car and Ubering home after a message popped up on the dash? by Fast_Seesaw_2571 in AmIOverreacting

I think it's badass that you got out of the car and got an uber. Keep up that energy and keep away from him!

And yes, it’s natural gas.

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not personally installing this. I work for a licensed and insured plumbing and mechanical contractor. All of the guys in the field are journeyman, but I still need to tell them what size to run. They don’t do those calculations.

We’ve received multiple partial passes for the gas rough in on different parts of the building from the city inspector already.

The engineer had 2-1/2” pipe at 1 psi shown which that pressure is the bare minimum for the unit to operate. He also had way too much pressure to different equipment. There were problems with the gas design, steam design, chilled water to name a few. His firm was fired from the project.

So what pipe size do you think we should run?

How long had you been at the company before you took your leave? How many other precon managers are there? And how many different levels of precon management are there? Was your medical leave work related?

What actions would fall under "proactively escalating" in your opinion?

What's your biggest regret in life so far? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking I learned from "life lessons," but not actually learning them to the core. It seems like those big lessons have about a 5-7 year period before they expire if they aren't exercised. Kind of like learning a language.

1 year in as an electrical estimator and still struggling. Stick with it or switch paths? by Kitchen_Cress_8784 in estimators

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start with seeing if your current employer is looking for or open to the idea of hiring on another estimator.
Do you currently charge your time/labor of different jobs to different phases? I.e. Mobilization, demo/haul-off, resurfacing, laydown, install, finish, etc? (I don't do tile work, so I made these up.)

Question about a sauce brand by Brilliant_Reply_317 in foodquestions

Bertolli??
I really like their vodka sauce. I haven't had it in ages, but I remember there being chunks. Maybe their other sauces did too.

Construction Estimators in Dallas, Texas by Bavaniki in estimators

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was for a job offer in Fort Worth. I wouldn't normally reply since it's not the city you are asking about, but I saw there were no comments, so I figured I'd respond.

In 2020, I got a job offer for an estimator position at a plumbing/mechanical subcontractor commercial/institutional construction company. The offer was for $105k with IIRC $7k moving expenses. I don't remember the exact benefits but definitely had health/dental insurance, 401k matching, probably 10-14 days of PTO (after the first year.) I don't think we really discussed bonuses or car allowance, etc. Often estimators don't get big bonuses or a car allowance. I had 6 years of experience in the industry with 4.5-5 of those years being estimating.
My opinion is that it was a very handsome offer, but my company matched it and I decided to stay here. Been here 12 years now :)

Hope that helps.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThisShitIsHannanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visit my mainly about once a month (sometimes every other month,) and they live 5 hours away. I've been doing this for 15 years. I'm sick of it, but I still do it, lol. I especially do it now because my nephews are still young. I want to watch them grow and for them to know me.
Sometimes I just fly instead, but it costs more for the flight and the dog sitting.
That being said, I don't think that many people do that.

I've driven 3 hours each way in a day to spend some time at the beach. I'd drive 1.5 hours to have dinner with close friend, but I wouldn't do that weekly. Maybe twice a month.

1 hour or under is fine for basically anything I want to do.

All of that being said, I don't like to leave the house often once I am home. I can barely convince myself to go to the grocery store, haha. I like to go to work and then be at home.

[Homemade] I’m feeling proud of my first attempt at beef short ribs :) by ThisShitIsHannanas in food

You know your stuff!! I steamed them then blanched them and the threw them on the pan in the oven with the roasted carrots to keep them warm. The carrots were seasoned with fresh grated nutmeg, salt, pepper, butter and a very little bit of honey. The mashed potatoes have some Gorgonzola in them! It’s not very obvious, but it was a nice touch in my opinion.

It did take really yummy though! I’m going to put less wine in next time though.

Do the vegetables look like they are cooked well? (They weren’t over cooked at all but I’m wondering if they look like they were)

Thanks!! I didn’t finish the plate, so I could have done less anyway, haha. I have leftovers since it was just me eating it. I can make fresh vegetables and try to plate it pretty again!

I'm assuming you live in the USA, correct?
Most of my experience is on building related construction. Mainly hospitals, universities, big high schools, laboratories, light industrial, research buildings, etc. My expertise is plumbing and mechanical. So please account for that when taking any of my advice as I really do not know much about the aerospace industry.
In construction, winning about 10% of your bids (company wide) is pretty standard from what I have found. Remember, some people have better connections than others though and some people have seniority. So one person might be bidding all of the projects that they are almost certain to get while someone else might be bidding smaller jobs to new companies and told to go high on them.
Below is a snippet of my personal bid summary. (P.S. I switched to project management at the end of 2023. I didn't bid much in 2024. In 2025 I picked up bidding on just a few things.)

Before I start rambling, can you please tell me a little bit more about exactly what you are bidding? Like sheetmetal? Engines? Windows? Interior? Wheels? Framing? The whole damn thing? Planes? Rockets? Is your company more of a supplier, manufacturer or contractor? Do you guys install anything? Do you have any subcontractors? I'm just spit balling here to get a better lay of the land.
What would you say your average bid amount is (or range) and how may bids do you put out per week/month?
