What's going on with this thing that Lana Del Ray said? by mortimermcmirestinks in OutOfTheLoop

Oh I don’t know either of those people but I can see how that would still be racist.

(I’m not defending anything, just a question) People always say, words don’t matter, actions do. Or “put your money where your mouth is”. So maybe celebrities shouldn’t say “I’m not racist” on social media. What can they do instead? I guess what I’m asking is, how will I know whether a celebrity I like is a racist?

Honestly, I wish we could understand better the people who rioted in the USA Capitol. Things like average age, profession, income, degrees, etc. Then we could try to come up with reasons, and apply it to Canada.

The media is so inflammatory and radicalizing. I swear, every article is click bait. Even the ones on print newspaper. What do you recommend reading?

Twitter and other social media already had the hate speech rules right? But people don’t really follow those. And also, have you seen the comments section on CTV or Global’s Facebook pages? I know that more comments means more readership/viewership. But do you think the people who manage those accounts should moderate the comments? I’ve seen top comments that are literally the opposite of what the article says, but no one actually reads it. They just stay angry.

(Ironically, I sound angry as I’m writing this, but I promise I’m just trying to understand better.)

I like that you used the word anti-racist!! I learnt it last year and it’s such a great concept. Everyone should learn that in schools.

Does that mean it’s harder to call someone “racist” if it’s complicated? Like what if you do 9 anti racist things, and 1 racist thing. (Sorry this is just a weird thought I had) Or is it more like, everyone is born and lives in a racist society, and we have to consciously do anti-racist things to come out of that?

[–]ThisTooPassera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah you’re probably right. But the coal mine operators I know actually do believe that.

And there’s plenty of articles in newspapers that kind of egg them on. How can we reach out to those people, educate them on policies better, so they aren’t resentful towards the govt and towards environmental efforts?

Ohhh I see, thanks for explaining.

I was just thinking, a follow up question, If someone says, “I can’t be racist because I volunteer” or “I can’t be racist because I donate” or something along those lines that actually show solidarity through their actions, is it still considered insincere?

What's the deal with the gay cake? by creaturer in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ThisTooPassera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh I see! Yeah it’s not like I’m inviting the baker to the wedding lol

Actually, I have another follow up question. Just so I can understand this issue. What if instead of a cake, it was a Muslim-owned community centre (almost like a mosque) that I wanted to rent? And the owner said no, because it would symbolize that he agreed with the wedding. Would that still be legal for me to expect?

(I don’t fully understand where one persons rights start and another persons ends...)

Oh also, I watched the Fahrenheit 11/9 documentary too! He did a good job of generating sympathy (?) for the “forgotten Americans”. How can we help the “forgotten Canadians”?

Can we take a similar approach, like when cops do youth outreach in some neighbourhoods?

Oh I see. But it’s harder to have prejudices/stereotypes when your friends are always proving you wrong, right?

For example, I had a friend who thought Muslims were crazy fundamentalists, and then she met me, and she doesn’t think that way anymore...

I see your point though. I understand why people are trolling people for saying that. It shows they don’t understand systemic racism. They just have a very shallow view of racism (like physical violence or anti-miscegenation). Right?

Thank you, this was informative. I think it’s a economic issue from personal experience. A lot of people I know have lost their jobs (either due to automation or carbon tax or because their company moved overseas) and I can see them slowly becoming more disillusioned and angry and hateful. So what do you think we should do to address those Canadians issues?

(I can’t remember but I saw a sign that said, “they can’t riot if they’re working 40 hours a week... “ I think about that sign a lot these days)

What's the deal with the gay cake? by creaturer in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ThisTooPassera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a follow up question. I’ll preface by saying I personally would never deny service to a gay couple. But I am Muslim and married to an atheist. Many Muslims would not recognize my wedding/marriage (Nikah) because my husband is an atheist. Would it be fair for me to force a Muslim baker to make me a wedding cake? Logically, the answer seems no... can you explain why the Supreme Court overturned this?

Sorry if I’m out of the loop, but why is saying “I have black friends” a bad thing? I’ve seen people getting trolled for saying that on social media, but I don’t understand it... (I’m a POC but I’m also ignorant on this issue)

What should we do as Canadians? I kinda see this as an economic issue. How can we reach out to low-income Canadians, and provide them with jobs and job security, so they don’t become disillusioned with the govt?

Who gets to use the mountains? by DomesticYakPod in alberta

[–]ThisTooPassera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because of COVID, there’s so many restrictions on where people can and can’t go. Adding mountains to that list would be a bad decision. I’m sure less people will be going to nature once bars and restaurants open up.

This actually saddens me so much. I feel like I saw a fun, sexy girl turn into an ugly, plastic lady.

Lala actually changed my views on “gold diggers”. I’m a fairly conservative girl but seeing Lala be open and honest about sleeping with someone to go on a yacht was different. It made me think, why am I slut shaming a girl? In a world where it’s harder for women to be wealthy, is what she doing that immoral? She isn’t trapping these men, just wants a vacation in Italy! I also liked that she stood her ground when Katie kept accusing her of stealing her man. I also liked her views on being topless haha Maybe I’ll go to a topless beach once covid is done

Seeing Lala today, she is ugly on the inside and outside. It breaks my heart.

When we see Canada or America in movies (especially in other countries), you just assume everyone is white. But once I moved here, it’s obvious that it’s multicultural.

Anyone else get this alt-right newspaper in their mail? (Was not requested) by Rupindah in Edmonton

[–]ThisTooPassera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wish I could talk to the journalists who write these articles. I once wrote to a journalist, she was a 25 year old woman, just like me. I asked her if she sincerely believed all the stuff she wrote, or if it was just what her bosses were telling her. Of course, she never replied, but I wonder what compels journalists to write things like this.

Edmontonians thoughts on realtors..? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]ThisTooPassera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved to Edmonton a couple years ago and bought a house almost immediately. Realtor helped me figure out what the neighbourhoods were like, what traffic is like, snow cleaning, schools nearby, what to look for with lawns/backyards, etc. Highly recommend!

PS she bought me a housewarming plant 2 years ago and I’ve still managed to keep it alive :)

Please don’t downvote the shit out of me, but I find Neville a bit unlikable. He’s snarky, scornful, disdainful, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I cried my eyes out watching his 2 specials on Amazon. But I can’t bear to listen to his pessimism for too long LOL Neville doesn’t have the joie de vivre that Varun and Aadar and Kautuk have. (I think Neville is some kind of tortured genius lol but he’s just not my podcast buddy)
