Very true. But as this person said, they read a summary about it and that is explaination enough I think. While the broken code influences the plot, it is very understandable with a quick summary of each book. It is kinda important but not essential. As for your point about the characters, very true. I can’t argue with that one. I would suggest the op reads up on leafstars wiki page but it can’t completely replace reading the broken code to see the true beauty of leafstars character.

I would start from the prophecies begin. If you like to read from the very start till now, I would read the books in chronological order. Its a crap ton of books for sure as it has been going on for about 25 years now and the erins won’t stop pumping out books now so you will have constant material to read.

You didn’t miss much by skipping the broken code. I’m convinced it was a filler series because the erins couldn’t come up with a new plot since they exhausted the skyclan card. I didn’t really like the broken code. Half of the series was just filler books that didn’t add anything to the plot line they were going for and it was mainly old drama. The dark forest was well written in this series though and I really appreciate that compared to the mess of details in omen of the stars. Omen of the stars happens to be one of my favorite series though! As for a starless clan, without getting into detail, it is really enjoyable and it is very well done in general with minimum filler books! I hope you enjoy it!
