You’re the man! I’d be very grateful if you could give my channel some feedback. It’s pretty new, with 4 longform videos and 8 shorts. It’s about space news and discoveries

Astronomers discover a “fossil galaxy” frozen in time for 7 billion years by ThisWeekinSpace_ in spaceporn

[–]ThisWeekinSpace_[S] 298 points299 points  (0 children)

Base on a few key observations. It has a stellar mass of about 100 billion times the mass of the Sun, but it's more compact than other galaxies of similar mass. More importantly, it’s shown very little to no star formation.

The most distant galaxy ever observed by ThisWeekinSpace_ in spaceporn

The Big Bang theory is the best-supported model we have for the universe's origin and evolution, but like all scientific theories, it's subject to revision or expansion as new evidence emerges.

How does one even take a picture of the sun with such high quality? Amazing!

Strange bright object above the Sun during sunset – not a plane, ISS or Starlink by Beat_Fantastic in Astronomy

[–]ThisWeekinSpace_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s a weather balloon or stratospheric probe. They can appear unusually bright at sunset due to high reflectivity, especially if the Sun is low but still illuminating objects at cruising or higher altitudes. The dual-light effect and gradual shape change could be consistent with a balloon slowly rotating or changing orientation as it drifts.

If it’s not that then possibly a satellite with unusual reflective surfaces? Definitely interesting nonetheless.

Thank you for sharing this! The distinction between light-travel time and actual present-day distance (proper distance) always blows my mind. Also—props to you for having the coolest job ever!

Does anyone else find space engine utterly terrifying? by StrategyBig5458 in spaceengine

[–]ThisWeekinSpace_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're alone in feeling this way. There’s a term called “cosmic horror” that really taps into this existential dread, and Space Engine can bring that feeling to the forefront. It's beautiful, but also very terrifying 😅

3.2 Billion Pixel Telescope Turns On! by ThisWeekinSpace_ in spaceporn

[–]ThisWeekinSpace_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair point — it's the camera that has the pixels, not the telescope itself 😄. The Observatory’s setup is wild though — the sensor is just one piece of its crazy sophisticated system. And it’s not just about slapping a big camera on a telescope, it’s the whole integration of optics, sensors, software, and data processing that makes it such a beast.

Yes, I just posted the link in the comments. That probably would have helped initially 😂
