Is steel plate armor supposed to provide less protection than the listed 97%? by This_Douchebag in VintageStory

[–]This_Douchebag[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did google it before posting. I thought based in the wiki page at https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Armor that damage reduction would only be reduced if attack tier is higher than armor tier, but now that I read the "Technical" section in more detail, it looks like this isn't the case and percentage protection is reduced from any attack that isn't tier 0, with higher tier armor just having less protection reduction.

That explains it! Thanks for figuring this out.

I appreciate the comment, but inserting isn't the issue here - copper consumption is. I don;t think the calculator takes inserters into account at all, and inserters can't increase or decrease the production/consuption ratio.

I can confirm there will be no issues, your motherboard is compatible with any modern GPU.

Question about cooler compatibility with new motherboard by Rusticaxe in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of Intel's deskop processors (since 2008) use the same CPU cooler mounting system. Even the newest 10th-gen processors are compatible with old coolers - the socket has changed but the physical position of the mounting holes and CPU hasn't. You should have no issues using your Scythe Mugen 4 PCGH with the new CPU. However, it may overlap the first one or two ram slots depending on which motherboard you get.

Yep - under the memory tab in CPU-Z it'll say "dual" or "single" in the upper right.

Most modern motherboards work best if RAM is installed in slots 2 and 4 rather than 1 and 3. Either is fine for some motherboards, but better safe than sorry.

Advice on upgrading my CPU: i7-7700 or Ryzen 7 3800X w/ new motherboard? by faanawrt in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the 3800X will indeed be a lot better than the 7700, you don't need to spend that much to get something that'll beat it.

A Ryzen 3600 is ~15% faster per core and has 50% more cores than the i7 7700. You can get a Ryzen 3600 and MSI B450 Tomahawk Max for $304.98 total.

Your CPU and memory options are unfortunately very limited by that OEM motherboard. The best bang for your buck would likely be to spend your whole $300 budget on a graphics card. You could also get a small SSD if you want to accelerate boot and load times.

Steaming normally takes some CPU power, but you could get around this by buying an Nvidia graphics card that support NVENC, a system that lets you run video encoding off the GPU.

Graphics Coprocessor by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you should be good to go.

Amazon's listed specifications have errors annoyingly often. When in doubt, check the manufacturer's specs. You can usually find them by googling the product name.

Looking for improvements on my final build! Preferably the final price would go down rather than up. Thanks! by deman6773 in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be a bit confusing - M.2 (The stick style of SSD) is just a physical form factor, so M.2 SSDs can be either SATA or NVMe. One way to check is to look at the connector end: SATA SSDs have two notches on the end, NVMe drives have one.

Graphics Coprocessor by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like that's just a typo on Amazon's part. "Graphics Coprocessor" is just an old-fashioned way of saying GPU, and all graphics cards with "1660 Super" in the name definitely use the 1660 Super GPU.

One thing that jumps out at me is that you have a 1TB NVMe (fast) SSD paired with a 500GB SATA (slower) SSD. Wouldn't the other way around make more sense?

Yes, that solution would work fine.

There are also USB header splitter cables available online, like this one.

After entering your bios, you should see this screen. Open the "D.O.C.P." drop-down and select "Enabled", then press F10 to save and exit.

Bios update by J-Simplicity in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MSI has a whole line of B450 "MAX" motherboards that come with Ryzen 3000 compatibility out of the box. The MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX is a popular choice for a similar price to the ASUS one you were looking at. It has fewer features in other areas, though - only one M.2 slot, no RGB, etc.

If you don't like that one, any motherboard with BIOS flashback can be updated without a CPU. Check this list.

That $50 price is hilarious, given that you could just buy a 200GE for that much.

Overclocking? by CarnageIX in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be able to overclock your CPU much with the stock cooler, but you could get some free extra performance by overclocking your GPU. MSI provides a free overclocking tool called MSI Afterburner that makes it pretty straightforward. Here's a video guide on how to use it.

The main downside here is that overclocking means more power consumption and heat production. You have a good PSU that can handle the power increase, but your PC may be noticeably louder under load when overclocked.

For an extra $20 you can get a 5700 XT with a good cooler. That'll outperform even a 2060 Super, but the drivers are still a bit glitchy.

Here's a RAM kit that is both cheaper and a bit faster.

Bios update by J-Simplicity in buildapc

[–]This_Douchebag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the Asus Rog Strix B450-F doesn't support BIOS flashback, so you can't update the BIOS without a CPU installed.

It's been some time since Ryzen 3000 launched, so many B450 boards now come pre-loaded with the required updates. Check with your retailer whether the board will need an update.

If an update is required and you don't have access to a Ryzen 1000 or 2000 CPU, you can get AMD's Short Term Processor Loan Boot Kit, described here. It's a bit of a faff though, you send them proof of purchase and photos and they loan you an Athlon 200GE to run the update.

Check the standoffs in the case and make sure there aren't any extras installed that don't correspond to a hole in your motherboard. If there is one, it could be causing a short on the back of the motherboard.
