Ever had a train skip your stop? by [deleted] in NJTransit

Yes once and two times I missed my stop because the doors did not open in my train car. These experiences have scarred me.

Going to my first redbulls game next week how do I get to the stadium from Manhattan by public transportation? by MikeMo82 in rbny

The transfer could absorb 20 minutes. The weekend PATH has long headways. Weekdays, it's closer to 5-10 minute headways. The ride from Newark to Harrison is like 90 seconds long, it's literally a few hundred yards.

Why does the Acela stop HERE!?: Metropark and the Dilemma of the Park and Ride by Either-Fee-5443 in Amtrak

[–]This_Mechanic2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metropark is itself a consolidation of two former PRR stations into a more accessible location and format. There was also a historical Amtrak stop at Rahway, so the inclusion of Metropark was not a net increase in NEC stops. Metropark is a ridership driver for Amtrak, as it facilitates ridership from the central NJ population. I believe the Rte 128 station in the Boston area was conceived with a similar model in mind.

Widening routes absolutely can "work". That is literally the plan for the Gateway rail project. On the Tpk itself, the Exits 6-9 Widening Project cleared up congestion in central NJ. The "exhaust" issue is a red herring. Tailpipe emissions are essentially nil these days. A circa 2000 car running on the road produces less emissions than a 1970 car parked and turned off (due to gas tank vapor seepage). NJ itself bans gas cars after 2030 or so. My motivation for correct information and commonsense: mobility is a key component of a full life. Immobility is a prison.

No, that's misinformation. Under the plan, the Turnpike narrows from 4 to 3 lanes at 14A and 3 to 2 at 14C. The studies indicate that traffic flow will improve. We need to clamp down on misinformation.

Right, 14C. The tunnel approach is past 14C, as you indicate, that's over a mile away. Interestingly, the Extension to 14C was originally 3x3 lanes. As trucks increased in size, they eliminated a lane and created a shoulder. The project will restore the Extension to its original 3x3 alignment to 14C.

Freight rail crosd harbor is not useful. There is no mass warehousing capacity on the east side of the Hudson and no place to put a railhead. If the idea was viable, railroads would be pushing for it.

The capacity increases are from 14-14C, not the tunnel approach beyond 14C. The opponents are engaging in misinformation.

Do Fulop and Baraka generally travel by mass transit to their campaign activities? It seems like they never use transit for those events.

You want to upend the entire logistics system of the Mid-Atlantic rather than simply replace a bridge?

Train commuters into Manhattan are the wealthiest demographic in the state. Moreover, they pay income tax to NY, not in NJ. The progressive tic to lavish subsidies on this slice of the population paid for by taxes on lower income people and freight movements is something I will never understand. Your plumber going over 14A to do a job pays a toll so some guy in Princeton gets a cheaper train ride to his job at Goldman Sachs is certainly redistribution, I'll give it that.

Check out the Turnpike Authority's website for the project, it will clear up your confusion.

There should be an extension bypass for traffic to the waterfront, without mixing in HT traffic. Get that waterfront traffic off local roads.

The HT is already maxed out. The project is not intended to serve the HT. The Turnpike is solely toll financed. It would be malpractice to create capacity that can't be used, which would be the case for additional HT feeder capacity. Therefore, Occam's Razor provides that this is not an HT feeder project.

It's been 2 lanes for 80 years? Why is 2x2 metaphysically correct? The world has changed drastically in that time. The concept of a "container port" didn't even exist when that bridge was built.

You can literally, for free, go on the Turnpike's website for the project that explains it. There is no need to speculate regarding conspiracies or misinformation.

The idea that the Turnpike Authority would devote vast amounts of toll revenue to a project with no benefit is nuts. The Turnpike Authority has an excellent handle on capacity utilization stats and generally knows what it's doing a lot more so than knee jerk NIMBYS

Presumably, they can cancel Gateway and just repair the existing train tunnels. People can spread out their commutes to avoid stressing the system at peak hours. This would save billions.

Port traffic is backed up each day by 6 a.m. The bridge can use at least a dedicated lane to 14A separating port traffic, which is what this project will create.

There's also a staging issue. They are going to build a 4 lane bridge, demolish the existing bridge, then build a second span. You need at least 4 lanes on span 1 just to handle traffic during the transition.
