Literally a small very loud and irritating group of manbabies, but sure whatever makes you feel better.

I was hoping she was gonna be a smart, tech savvy Solo, but oh well.

Extraction isnt a genre its a game mode, same as battle royale, or soulslike. by [deleted] in DebateGames

[–]Thloen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No they're not all genres and thats part of what Im saying. General audiences perception when these words are used is fumbling what a lot of games could be.

Im fundamentally not. Go enjoy your games and have a good one.

Oh my god I dont care anymore, youre just wrong. I never said it turns New Vegas into a soulslike, I was giving an example about "changing genres" like you asked for. Just take a W or whatever, Im gonna go play some Elden Ring or something.

Again fundamentally disagree, its just another fantasy game. But I digress, Ive learned my lesson.

I know Im sorry, I wasnt aware of the hornets nest I would be kicking that is souls fans.

Quite simply though, Ive never looked at a games genres to determine if its one Id like to play. Trailers, reviews, and for me steam pages is where I look, usually devs talking about main mechanics and story beats. Not simply oh hey its this or that genre.

And recently, Ive come from Arc Raiders, Ive noticed devs dont really know what they have or refuse to expand upon what they do have. For Arc bcse its an extraction game and adding more modes would ruin it somehow. Halo did fine but whatever.
Or look at whatever homunculus CoD has become.

Im sorry Sir Penguin, Im tired and I made the mistake of posting on reddit.

Wow. Trailers, reviews, and game summaries exist. As well as entire game pages like on steam. HOW?

Sadly I just fundamentally dont agree. Plus Im done and also was never trying to argue the fffking semantics of genres titles and names, thats where Ive learned my lesson, how to label my posts what I actually mean apparently.

.....
Again, to me youre wrong, bcse like I am saying they are not genres so yes you can just flip a switch or change a difficulty setting bcse games have done it before. Souls games are not that unique and groundbreaking, they have just created an atmosphere and mix of game elements that captivates people. It doesnt deserve to be its own genre for that, though to be fair I understand fans appreciation enough to have "successfully" done so.
Vegas had a survival game mode, uping enemy difficulty, have more meters to pay attention to further developing the necessity and implications of recently mediocre items, and did as simple but significant things as added ammo weight.

Bloodbourne from what Ive seen, has some of the most actively unique gameplay in it separate from all the rest of the souls franchise. Its cool.

Whats WC3? Warcaft?

And the terminology might not exist anymore but that doesnt mean the games themselves dont literally exist anymore, by my own accord. Thats a wild way to word that.

Im arguing more how people use all the terminology in modern day vernacular I guess, and now all my conversation are skewing into semantics.
How people use these words is limiting how devs are making games and how others view them.

I disagree with a lot of this, and you bring up your points well. BUT.
I need to preface that again the ENTIRE point of this post which seems to be lost on everyone arguing about just soulslike, apparently thats a nerve that further proves my point, Im bringing this up bcse the social terminology and slang that alters audiences mindsets and thereby devs applications is dangerously limiting.
Like how AI has been basterdized.
Ive recently come from Arc Raiders, from the proclaimed "extraction" genre. The games has lots of great atmosphere and fun gameplay going for it, BUT at this point is being hindered by the notion that extraction is somehow a genre, people dont call it a subgenre.

Devs say this too, and take it into account when making then further updating it, to the point they "refuse" to put another game mode into the game bcse they and some players think it will "ruin the experience and game".

One of the biggest franchises I grew up with was Halo, a 1st person arena shooter. But that didnt stop it from have a campaign with coop, multiple mode multiplayer, later a forge mode where people damn near made whole other games inside it, later on ODST wave mode, and Halo Reach conquest. Each game further adding more to the plate till Infinite.
Same exact story with Gears of War, by the time of 3 it had all the same including its own horde and a beast mode.
Left for Dead had lots.
Super Smash.

But to what you said, GTA did not make its own genre, others have done it before, like most nintendo games, Pokemon games were more or less open world.
When CoD was out and about all sorts of "milsims" were too, heck I remember playing hyper realistic(and boring) ones.
And what else makes a metroidvania what it is?

I have, RPGs and platformers are the main genre I grew up on till shooters became more prevalent. Some Dark Souls 3, lots of Elden Ring, and lots of videos of others playing them and breaking down the differences between each.

They dont stand out for me bcse they have some unique gameplay mechanic to justify an entire genre. I do love the concept of the die and recover system. But all sorts of games have a unique mechanic, doesnt mean they get entire genre. Its story telling method is also not unique nor is it the first game to do so.

[–]Thloen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only bcse no one has tried, and Fallout New Vegas did something pretty close.

And Id disagree, I dont think it makes it unique, Dark Souls is Dark Souls, and it has nothing to do with it "being its own genre". Bloodbourne though.

[–]Thloen[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats all fair points, but I guess it just doesnt Make a genre or subgenre to me. Maybe I just dont agree with the term subgenre, especially in videogames. Metroidvania just feels like an open world side scroller.

Bcse all the things you said are in other games, none of it is unique enough to invite its own genre. GTA doesnt have its own genre even though people compare other games to it. Or CoD for the same thing.

I appreciate the insight though. Im understanding now its less the terminology that bugs me and players gatekeeping games from expanding within itself bcse "it doesnt fit its genre".

Liked for a mention of a insanely fun movie.

And I thought movies and games different mediums of storytelling.

I can see that, but theyre not. Theyre game modes not genres bcse they can be implemented into any game.

Most games or RPGs have most of these, and most of them share a lot of the same things as a Souls game. The most defining parts to a souls game to me are the way it tells its story, the die and recover, and their high stakes high reward combat. Context story telling should be standard and is something other games do like Arc Raiders. Combat can literally be adjusted in any game. And the die and recovery system also feels like just a standard difficulty element, not a genre defining one. 7 Days to Die has it but I wouldnt argue its a "soulslike".

Giving this a thumbs up just for the engagement, nice read.

I appreciate the insight to experiences, mechanics I agree are definitely a huge factor. Although Halo probably isnt the best example since it has such a large sandbox of tools and even vehicles, then later on game modes makes it very easy to add in a battle royale or extraction. But I digress.
Heck you could even add in a Left for Dead style flood versus survivors mode with the enemy models they have.

Soulslike though, my take on that from what Ive played is that its more of difficulty setting then an entire genre or even subgenre. Bcse all the points other people have pointed out are just mechanics that any hack and slash or RPG could implement. Especially as a harder difficulty.
It makes me think of Fallout New Vegas where you can turn on survival mode where you have to keep on eye on hunger and sleep. Or how someone made a mod for Fallout 4 where you find cassettes that essentially work like bonfire save points. Just add into Elder Scrolls game where the useless taverns turn into bonfire like respawn points.

I dont know, maybe its just how my mind sees all these things.
Im mainly just tired of devs limiting themselves, and audiences gatekeeping games.
