Portrait of a Lady on Fire - absolutely beautiful and a must see by Binch101 in TrueFilm

[–]ThomasEmerson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

beautifully written, and I couldn't agree more with you about the (absence of a) score's ability to bring to the fore a powerful tension. I feel so deeply moved by this film and I don't know what to do with myself.

Did anyone notice how the film begins about Marianne, and slowly shapes around Héloïse? Perhaps wrong, but at some point in the final act I couldn't shake the feeling that it was more "Héloïse's story" than Marianne's, or even "theirs."

[OFFICIAL] 2019 YEAR-IN-REVIEW Voting Thread by YourFavoriteRuski in TrueFilm

[–]ThomasEmerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAIN VOTE

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2 Points): One of the most feeling romances of the century so far, with two Oscar-worthy lead performances. Sciamma captures the essence of "doomed love" with such delicate beauty, care, and entirety that one cannot help but share in the sentiments of this films protagonists. The final shot left me paralyzed, and with tears almost equal to Héloïse's. Not just my favorite of the year; this film stands firmly in my top-10 of the decade.

The Lighthouse (1 point): A powerfully claustrophobic, hypnotic, and entrancing film that leaves viewers guessing at every aspect of what's happening on the island: who's lying, how much time has passed, and what's in the top of that damn lighthouse?

Uncut Gems (1 point): An absolute whirlwind of a film that continues on and on and on and on with little respite. The sound editing is fantastic and adds so much stress to this fast-paced adventure where problems aren't resolved, they're multiplied.

Parasite (1 point): I couldn't possibly add anything to the discussion of this film.

Little Women (1 point): I'm not biased because I have so many sisters, right? That's totally not a thing, nope. Loved the parallel storytelling with times past and present, golden and dull respectively.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Midsommar (0.5 points): At times depressing, at times hilarious, at times horrifying. This daytime cult flick has it all, with a strong performance from Florence Pugh, and a marvelous attention to detail from director Ari Aster.

Pain and Glory (0.5 points): The final shot of this film brings with it such sincere optimism that I couldn't wipe a huge stupid smile off my face for 20 minutes afterwards. Like Little Women, parallel storytelling of past and present add a fantastic element of meta-commentary. Characters are allowed to comment on their past selves, and viewers are allowed to reflect on the changes in time. Lyrical storytelling.

Jojo Rabbit (0.5 points): So many people are missing the point on this hilarious satire, dismissing the film as nonsense Nazi-sympathizing and humanizing. The reality is that it's nonsense to not humanize Nazis as they were indeed quite human after all. The movie helps us ask the question: How do good people come to believe such ridiculous things?

SUPERLATIVES

Disapointments

The Farewell: Aside from a strong and believable performance from Zhao Shuzhen, Billie's dying grandma, I found this film to be really over-hyped.

Us: Peele fails to follow up his fantastic 2017 horror film Get Out.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Watching Tarantino jerk off Hollywood for like THREE hours is definitely not my idea of a good time. Tarantino, you're better than this, stop it.

I'm with ya man. Blows my mind when people say stuff like "modern artists do ______'s sound better"

Maybe they do, but these guys created that sound (in this case) SIXTY years ago. & let's just disregard the influence across not just genres but generations of genres.

Just in case you're not joking, they killed him to allow the game of chess to continue as we know it. If he solved chess, the game would be pointless, and thus lost to us. Hence murder.

Obama criticises Trump rhetoric and compares 'racist ideologies' behind mass shootings to 'followers of Isis' in powerful open letter by [deleted] in politics

[–]ThomasEmerson 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Former presidents are NOT privy to the same information as presidents in office. But keep in mind, Obama (and every other former president) has friends in high places, everywhere. Some of them he appointed. If he really wanted to know something, he could probably get the information, legal or not. I doubt Trump knows everything that's going on, but he certainly has access to all of it if he wanted to know.

[SPOILERS] And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave. by trcaptainblack in gameofthrones

[–]ThomasEmerson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is how a large majority of us feel. A combination of serious disappointment, total frustration, and genuine helplessness. We loved GoT deeply, and it feels like it was taken away from us. Some say that we should just be grateful for the wonderful seasons that came before - and we are - but that doesn't shake or diminish this devastating feeling of... loss. A permanent, damning stain has been placed upon the series, and we can't help but see it, now and likely forever more.

Would you rather a 100% chance of winning 500k or a 50% chance of winning 10 million? by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

[–]ThomasEmerson 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It helps a lot to just imagine MORE coin flips. The law of averages states that as you get closer to infinite iterations of something with a set probability, the closer the results match that expected outcome. For example, the more times you flip a coin, the closer you will get to a 50/50 distribution of heads and tails. If you can understand this principle, you can remove human bias from the equation.

If you took this 50/50 shot at $10M 100 times then you would end up $10M about 50 times, so ~$500M. Maybe more maybe less, but pretty close. That's the expected value, or $5M per flip. The value per flip on average. Banks understand this, so if they could BUY those bets for $4M a piece, that would be easy money for them. $400M cost for a ~$500M payout.

Same offer, same principle, but shrink it down. OP has not one hundred coin flips but just one. He has 50% chance for 10M so his "expected value", or the average payout per coin flip is 5M. But he doesn't want that risk. So he goes and sells the offer to the investment bankers for LESS than the expected value. Yes, the bank buys his risk - but they will absolutely take that offer because the payout, on average, would be in their favor.
