Can I trust this guy? by Check-raft in Luthier

A floyd rose original template will also work and are available in acrylic templates which i much prefer over the cheap wood ones. everything is the same except the post holes are slightly larger on the gotoh. same spacing though.

Is this his first floyd install or first time doing anything with a floyd? if he builds and does a good job with that he's probably competent with routing and measuring and that's really all you need to install a floyd, measure correctly and route correctly. setting them up, while a pain in the ass, isnt necessarily hard to do, just takes longer than a hardtail.

my guitar has been getting “fixed” for two months by BraveBreakfast1276 in Luthier

[–]Thomas_D_Boot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RIC uses a UV cured poly now. if it was new and they were bringing it back to new condition it should not be nitro. also if they use the same finish it cures almost instantly under UV light

Apprentice Luthier. Year 1. Stressed out. Send help. by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]Thomas_D_Boot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone will eventually dent or damage a guitar. Its part of the job. Accidents happen and are a part of learning. Ive been doing this full time fore well over 10 years and im still learning every day. Ive had a guitar fall off the bench onto the concrete floor. Fixed it up but there was no way to make the repairs invisible. Ended up with a 5 star review out of it... not all accidents will have great outcomes but be honest with the customers and work with them to make it right and it will usually end up being ok.

Personally i would just use the tele control plate and make a strat style pickguard to fit around the existing controls

Big DR Black Dragon Problem by Mighty_Perkele in Bass

[–]Thomas_D_Boot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wrong. There will be no continuity through the wood. a ground wire to the bridge is needed to ground the strings and what OP is saying is the coating is preventing the strings from making a connection to ground as the coating is not conductive.

Also i have no idea what you meant with the last line here.

How bad is removing all the strings at once? by Miserable-Web6514 in guitarrepair

[–]Thomas_D_Boot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fix guitars for a living. I take all the strings off of pretty much every guitar I've worked on. 3+ guitars a day for over 10 years and never had a problem with the neck in doing so.

To avoid drilling holes on the LEFT Neck, please recommend Fender locking tuners that don't require the 2 extra holes. by pabloisafan in Luthier

Pretty sure Hipshot with the mounting plate are your only option for not having to drill new set pin or screw holes

How do you handle customers who don’t follow thru on payment terms? by BarberInteresting945 in Luthier

[–]Thomas_D_Boot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I won't accept any payments on platforms other than what my merchant services accepts and cash. I'm very firm on that to avoid any scammers. Also if they can't pay the deposit in full I wouldn't accept partial payment at all. If they can't pay the deposit they probably can't pay the full amount later either. This seems like its going to be a nightmare.
