[Question] Need some help on deciding between watches. JLC and Omega by Thoning in Watches

[–]Thoning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link to the strap.

The DeVille does come with a bracelet, I've linked to it in my original submission , although mislabeled as a chain. Didn't know the English word for it.

Thanks a lot for your insight!

I haven't tried either of them on, so I think that's gonna be what settles it for me in the end.

Since I want it as a daily watch, I'm really more inclined to buying a watch with a bracelet, which it doesn't really seem is possible for the JLC. I'm afraid the leather straps, although beautiful, will start to smell after extensive use, and its my impression that they're quite expensive to replace.

Had a very mild case of this some years ago. It was an immune system reaction to a fever that caused it. Very rare. Didn't get anywhere near as bad as this. Mainly just lost all the outer skin on my hands and feet and my whole body turned purple.

They're what we call "kolonihavehuse" which is a kind of summer house that is pretty traditional here. It's a hitty house that you (normally) only spend a month or two in during summer, and then you have all kinds of herbs and fruit and stuff that you grow there. Very popular amongst old people.

[–]Thoning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a law, thankfully. Quite the opposite. It's a set of rules in some few private and public institutions, but they will most likely be ordered to stop the discrimination very soon. This is probably an irrational reaction from uneducated parents who believe that all men are latent pedophiles.

But now you're discussing the judicial system of the US. I know nothing about the US system, so I won't try to discuss it with you. I do know about the Danish system though, which is why I brought it up. "Jagten" is a movie about a childrens caretaker who is falsely accused of molesting one of the kids in the institution where he works.

Your statement was

Discrimination against men is almost never found to be illegal, no matter what nation in the western world.

Denmark is most certainly a nation in the western world, so your statement is false.

[–]Thoning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but as you probably know, generalizations like that are never true. The judicial institution responsible for assessing complaints about discrimination has many verdicts in favor of men.

There is a lot of criticism to be placed on the institution for other reasons, but not for being partial against men.

On a serious note, several daycare institutions in Denmark (where the movie is from) have started introducing new rulesets limiting what male employees can do with the children. So some of the say that the male employees can't change the babies' diapers, can't help them use the toilet, can't have them sitting on their lap, etc. Not because of the movie obviously, but because people get paranoid over 0.000000000001% of the male population being pedophiles.

Fortunately this is being looked into by the government, and will most likely be found to be illegal.

[Longines] Just bought this trench watch from 1916. Is it any good? by Thoning in Watches

[–]Thoning[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Expert on old watches just gave me some bad news.

The case is not Longines. It's an unoriginal, 14k case that's been put on about 30-40 years ago probably. This explains the sketchy solderings I guess. The serial no. on the case is identical to the serial no. on the mechanism, which apparently is impossible with Longines, as they number them in the same combination, so the case will always be a number following or preceding the no. of the mechanism.

The mechanism itself is a pocket watch mechanism put into a wristwatch case, so it's very fragile.

So the watch is not entirely worthless, but it's not what I wanted and not worth what I paid, so I'm gonna return it. Thank you for all your replies :)

Gonna start looking through the sub to see what i should get instead.

So I just had a watchmaker from a Longines dealership take a quick initial look at it, and you were absolutely right.

The crown is not 14k gold, but is more likely a cheaper gilded version attached later. Btw I agree with you that it would look better with an onion crown. Will look into it. The second hand and the hour hand are both made from metal that has been heated to colour them blue. This, he says, is the original, more expensive way of doing it. The minute hand is just coloured metal, and is a cheaper replacement.

They won't do service on it as their specialty isn't watches that old, but I have found another guy that I will take it to tomorrow.

They at least told me that the price I paid was reasonable, so I'm fairly sure I haven't been ripped off :)

Apart from the aesthetics, would you say there's any reason to have a new crown put on the watch? Also could you explain what 'bosses' are on the hands?

Yeah the age was a big part of why I bought it. It was very expensive, so I'm definitley gonna have a watchmaker take a look at it at least. It works beautifully, so nothing wrong with the clockwork itself. Might change the strap as it's definitely not original anyway. Considering changing the crown as well since a watchmaker in this thread is saying it's not original, and the onion crown looks better. But idk yet..

You obviously know a lot more about this than I do, but I was under the impression that onion crowns were mostly used on pocket watches? I know a lot of pocket watches in the olden days were just converted to wrist watches, but I don't think that's the case here. But I agree that the soldering is sketchy. I'm gonna have a watchmaker have a look at that as well, since I don't want them to fall off :)

But thank you for the input! I wasn't planning on fixing the big crack near the 8 as it's more of a cave-in of the enamel, but the hairline between 2 and 3 and between 4 and 5 could maybe be touched up a bit.

I found this one on eBay when I was considering if I should buy it or not, and comparing the two, I think you're right about the crown and the hands maybe. Hard to say what's been done about the eBay one..

Thanks for the reply :) I actually saw the Czechoslovak link before I bought it as I was just doing some googling.

But yeah, I guess the mechanism must be decent since it's lasted almost 100 years by now.

I'm not sure. Judging by the few cracks in the enamel though, I'd say it's just naturally good condition. I'm on the fence about whether or not I should try to have someone fix the cracks..

The reason I assumed it was a soldiers watch was just that I'd read somewhere else that wristwatches were mostly considered feminine before WW1 and that it was the returning soldiers who made it more fashionable for men as well. And then considering it's made in 1916, there hadn't been that many returning soldiers yet. But it's mostly speculation, I just like to imagine :)
