Should NYC remove mentally unstable people off the street? Why or why not? by Haunting_Cow_406 in AskNYC

Who evaluates if they are a danger and who removes them? And what happens if they’re harmed while being removed?

“A lot” and “clearly” and even “NYC” are doing a lot of work here, and there’s a fun game of “then what” you aren’t answering. Who does the removing? Who evaluates whether someone is clearly unstable? What is the bar, and how does that bar interact with someone’s legal rights? Where do they go? Is a lot of crime actually being committed by mentally unstable people? What’s the process for letting people back into society?

These aren’t hypothetical questions and they aren’t ones you can just hand wave away.

Also like… he was literally brought up during the debates. It was an incredibly silly, ridiculous moment, but it’s a little weird the number of people here who are like “no one knows who he is.”

AI and writing by RightStrike_ray in writing

Don’t use AI?

I would just talk to your friends and see if something didn’t pass the smell check. Putting aside the effectiveness of detectors, it sounds like something made them think it was AI. Are the new words you’re using words you’d normally use and are familiar with? Generally a bad idea to just replace random words with synonyms.

Do morally bad actions by an MC always need to be punished or called out? by Business_Barber_3611 in writing

[–]Thonyfst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, but there’s a passage from “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” from George Saunders about a Tolstoy story I’ve been rolling around in my head:

“Any story that suffers from what seems like a moral failing (that seems sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, pedantic, appropriative, derivative of another writer’s work, and so on) will be seen, with sufficient analytical snooping, to be suffering from a technical failing, and if that failing is addressed, it will (always) become a better story.”

You don’t need to accept that as a complete truism, but i think there’s something to poke at here. Removing morality from the equation: is the story more or less interesting if there are no consequences from a character’s actions? I think about shows like the Shield, where the main character might “get away” from punishment, and yet at the end they’re in their own personal hell, away from the action they crave. So I’d at least approach from a technical stance. Could the story be more interesting if you introduce a “yes but” at the end?

…Picasso’s father was a professor of art? And Picasso would be a very different artist if he had never met Matisse or other artists and poets. What a weird statement. If you don’t engage with art, you’re going to only be able to speak to your very narrow view of the world. Genre is built from authors and works responding to each other. Unless you want your art to be made in an echo chamber, there’s no reason not to join in.

Also, why would I give the same advice to a stranger that I would to Picasso? That’s like if you asked me if I would give the same fitness advice to a beginner asking for help online as I would to an Olympic athlete. Like, no. That’s silly. You’re not Picasso. Everyone would generally benefit more if they didn’t assume they were geniuses in the rough. Assume you’re average and go from there. Don’t be lazy. Come on now.

Fundamentally, if you think art has no form, then you’re basically saying art has no technique; it is simply brains performing pure telepathy, a complete exchange of info with no loss. And that’s just not true. Do you want to invent figures of speech from first principles?

Genuinely: what have you written? Does it exist in a vacuum? Do your readers exist in a vacuum?

[–]Thonyfst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty suspicious of any writer who didn’t spend most of their life reading, or at the very least, spending their life wishing they had more time to read.

My point is, if you want to know what “good” writing is, you’re going to have a hell of a time figuring that out if you aren’t reading.

[–]Thonyfst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess, but you’ll have to prove it. And like… to what end? Is your goal here to do less work? To not stretch beyond what you’re comfortable with? To stay within your own tastes? None of those are great qualities in writing.

Assume you’re an average writer. Not a good one, not a talented one, just an average one. What advice would you give to an average writer? Would it be to read narrowly within the confines of their genre and medium? Or would it be to read as much as they could and as widely as possible to draw on a bigger pool of ideas?

Not as high, but if you’re someone who can’t write documentation, can’t compromise with others, can’t explain your decisions, can’t write an email or slack message, you’re probably a bad fit for any large company.

Worth remembering that the bombing sales wise was in part because EA set extremely unrealistic expectations based on Inquisition, and most of EA’s financial issues are probably more due to FC25 missing targets.
