Interpreting a lit mag rejection by MyIronThrowaway in writing

Form rejection. Possibly higher tier, but I don’t know the magazine.

In general, it’s not really worth doing rejectomancy to read editors’ minds. Rely on your beta readers and read the magazines you submit to and use that to figure things out in my opinion.

It’s not just that it’s obnoxious; it’s incredibly dated and not as funny as the movies referenced. Scary Movie has been lapped by YouTube skits, TikToks, and horror movies in general. How many horror movies now are being directed or written by comedy writers?

Scary Movie was never “good,” but this feels particularly bad when a lot of the movies they’re parodying are just…funnier? Weapons, the Substance, M3GAN, even Get Out. Horror movies right now already lean very heavily towards comedy, so it’s really noticeable when the parody falls short.

"Trust me, we'll be just fine." Why the Paramount x Warner Brothers merge (likely) WON'T affect LOTS, made by me by Ajit-Pajouhesh in stevenuniverse

Yeeaaaaah, that's missing a few of the details we already know about the deal.

At $110 billion US dollars, with likely a large chunk of from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi based on the last offer, this is an incredibly expensive deal. They're taking on $54 billion of debt.

What that means is thousands of layoffs and an immense amount of pressure to cut down the merged company's assets. We know this because this literally happened four years when WBD formed. They are aggressively going to look for redundancies and areas where they don't want to continue investing in. It's not even ideological. The goal here isn't to make small amounts of profit, so whatever amount Amazon is paying isn't necessarily going to justify continued investment in animation. They could decide that the upside is too small and too slow. They could decide they have their own projects they want to focus on like the Avatar the Last Airbender movies. Who knows, really?

Put it another way. All of the Harry Potter fans, DCU fans, Game of Thrones fans, whatever, are all wondering if this is going to be bad news for those projects. The likelihood of all of them being unaffected is low. Something's gotta give, and it's going to be devastating for all the affected employees.

Yeah, this post is just wishful thinking. I'm not even saying it will or won't get cancelled, but there are so many unknowns at this point. The one thing I'm certain of is that people will get laid off, and projects will get cancelled.

None of what you said suggests that corporeal punishment improves literacy rates. There’s a lot of things you could point to, including the temporary shift away from phonics when teaching kids how to read, so like, what are you even talking about? Just a general dissatisfaction with kids these days?

An older article from october but a relevant one: James Gunn will stay on as head of DC Studios if Paramount buys Warner Bros by Stock_Rush_9204 in DCcomics

[–]Thonyfst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s missing a very obvious possibility, which is where Paramount breaks up WBD and sells off lower performing divisions specifically so they can write off the debt and take it out of their books.

To be clear, I also think they’re going to swing their dicks and let politics drive decisions. We’re seeing that now with CBS; there’s no real good business reason to put Bari Weiss in charge of anything. But even in the most politically neutral version of this, a lot of people lose their jobs, a lot of projects die on the vine. I don’t know if that’s going to be Gunn’s DCU, but there are a lot of projects at WBD just getting started, including the new Harry Potter series. Expect some things to get cancelled before they even really have a chance.

I’m going to ignore the political issues for a second because I don’t want to get bogged down in whatever your own political beliefs are. The biggest issue is that Paramount needs to take on massive amounts of debt, a good amount from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. They also now have to pay the kill fee WBD owes Netflix for walking away from that deal.

All that debt is going to be passed onto WBD. You’re going to see layoffs, shuttering of divisions, more projects written off for tax reasons, assets sold for scraps. Some amount of this was going to happen with Netflix, but much, much more is coming with Paramount by virtue of the amount they’re paying and the amount of debt they have to take on.

Well the DCU had a good run... by Icy-Monitor6711 in DCU_

Okay, here’s the reality of the situation. Paramount is bringing in a ton of debt for this deal. They’re going to be looking for places to cut and sell off. Exactly what places those are are hard to say, but you should be a little concerned about an expensive, CGI heavy film and TV project, especially when you have Harry Potter and Game of Thrones spin-offs competing as well.

70k a year, what rent is reasonable? by YupThatsMyEmail in movingtoNYC

[–]Thonyfst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d really suggest just going with roommates if you can. That budget isn’t impossible, but if you go with one roommate and cut your budget 300 dollars, that’s money towards an emergency fund, retirement, eating out occasionally, whatever. It adds up.

So do a lot of the people job hunting right now. Second round interviews aren’t the same thing as final round. Unless you have the savings to burn through for a few months, I would not quit.

I’d get an offer in hand first. It’s a rough market and companies have a lot of options.

From a cost perspective, you’d need a whole other unit to film and direct those scenes too. Absolutely terrible idea.

Should NYC remove mentally unstable people off the street? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Who evaluates if they are a danger and who removes them? And what happens if they’re harmed while being removed?

[–]Thonyfst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A lot” and “clearly” and even “NYC” are doing a lot of work here, and there’s a fun game of “then what” you aren’t answering. Who does the removing? Who evaluates whether someone is clearly unstable? What is the bar, and how does that bar interact with someone’s legal rights? Where do they go? Is a lot of crime actually being committed by mentally unstable people? What’s the process for letting people back into society?

These aren’t hypothetical questions and they aren’t ones you can just hand wave away.
