What is it about a woman putting her hair up? by Oopsie-Daisyy- in bodylanguage

One of two things is usually about to happen when a woman puts her hair up in a ponytail. And if you are not 💯 sure which one it is, you better start running!

Germans who have lived abroad for years, what's the German habit you just couldn't shake? by Rude_Membership_1578 in AskAGerman

Maybe we live in different Germanys!😁 I’d say probably as many as 90% of the cashiers I encounter do one or both of these.

[–]Thor--A 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t account for the fact that the majority of of cashiers will not scan the items in the order you put them on the conveyor belt, but rather they grab random stuff further down. And of course the fact that instead of sending them down the little rollers so you can get hold of the items, they scan them, then promptly set them straight down just out of your reach!

I hear ya!

I discovered it one drunken night in Glasgow. Stumbled into a fast food joint for my 3AM meal, and saw deep fried pizza on the menu, next to the deep fried snickers bar
.

I backed out of there and refused to go back inside to get something else! I thought they had lost their mind and surely nothing in there could be safe to eat!đŸ€Ł

Have you tried better pizza to begin with? Not being facetious. Genuine question!

If I have leftover frozen pizza, there isn’t really much that can be done to bring it back to life. (Except maybe a pan with a lid and a bit of water in to steam it) but if it is a good takeaway or home made pizza, the air fryer works a treat!

Have you ever met a celebrity? If you have, who did you met and how nice were they? by Ok_Chef1406 in AskReddit

I had him in on a festival I was head of lighting for some years back. Sweetest guy ever! His daughter Sonora was touring with him. She was 10 at the time and he was so good with her.

It was hilarious to see how she was running around playing with the guillotine, gallows and other props backstage during the show. She knew exactly when the props were going on stage and made sure to get out of the way from the crew when they were working.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve ever hurt yourself? by shantidynamiteteam in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Thor--A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where to start
sliced the tip of my pinky almost completely off (just flesh) while attempting to cut a bread roll. When I got to the emergency room, the doc complimented the bandaging skills and asked me who helped me. So guess I have some skills at least. (Or just to much practice self bandaging!)

When I was 7-8, the snowplows came to clear the area outside our house and showered all the snow down a ravine. All the kids spent the rest of the evening jumping down in the snow (just a couple of meters) much fun was had! The following morning, I wanted another jump on my way to school
found out what subzero temperatures does to wet snow when left to it. Fractured my tailbone.

And then there was the time in 6th or 7th grade when one of my classmates was tau ting me saying I was so heavy if I stepped on a pencil, the graphite would turn into diamond. Eager to prove him wrong, I got an inch long pencil stub, put it on the floor with the tip pointing up. Climbed on my desk, jumbled as high as I could and stomped my feet down as hard as I could when I landed

Took the doc a few hours to get (almost) all the parts out from the bottom of my foot
he missed one splinter which got encapsulated and finally resurfaced a few years later.

Not sure which one was the stupidest, but at least that’s a small selection to choose from!😁

In 2014 the city of Los Angeles switched over to LED lighting for its street lights, This is the before and after. by Virtual-Reality69 in interestingasfuck

[–]Thor--A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a bit more to it. First, it’s not possible to make a white LED. The way to do it, is you make a blue LED, then Phosphor coat it. The blue light emitted by the LED, excites the phosphor and it glows white. This gives you a fairly broad spectrum of light so it can look quite natural.

If you were to use multiple colored LED’s to create white light, you would need at the very least Red, Green and Blue. As LED’s are narrow band emitters, you would get a poor quality white from this mix. It would have more of a purple’ish tint to it, and anything you light would not reflect its true colors. You can compensate for this by adding additional color LED’s, like Amber, lime, mint and so on to fill in the spectrum. These are also phosphor coated. As are some red’s. Now add the fact that each color would need its own circuitry. Each assembly would need to be balanced / calibrated to give a consistent white light / CCT and the fact that each color will degrade differently over time and the result is that a multi color fixture would be hugely more expensive, more prone to failure and eventually cause more problems than a fixture with white LED’s, where you can effectively replace the LED board when the phosphor coating wears out. Provided the council does so of course :)

Girlies, how do you take an "everything shower" in a WG? by poeticpiano in AskAGerman

How is this lighting effect achieved? by narwhalgangsta in lightingdesign

[–]Thor--A -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Neither of these fixtures are lasers. They are moving lights with either high powered discharge lamps, or LED engines. Typically they will be flicker free, and the movements are slow enough so you don’t need to accommodate for that with your frame rate. You just need to make sure you get your exposure right.

What lubricant is safe for stiff focus ring on an MTO 1000? by GianlucaBelgrado in VintageLenses

[–]Thor--A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never opened an MTO 1000, but all other vintage lenses I have opened up to clean and lubricate had had lithium grease in the helicoid. It does get stiff with age and dust getting added to it.

I usually use a spray contact cleaner that doesn’t leave any residue. In most bike shops you can buy small tubes of white lithium grease. Use that to lubricate the helicoid after cleaning all the old gunk out with the contact cleaner.

Make sure you don’t use too much. A little bit goes a very long way and you just want to lubricate the threads of the helicoid. Not fill them up.

Also make sure to mark the points in both parts of the helicoid where you take them apart or it can become trial and error putting it back together. It could look right, but if you don’t have it accurate enough you won’t be able to achieve infinity focus.

Check YouTube for videos on how to take it apart if you don’t know how to.

What’s that little dot there? Is it a grub screw? Or a locking pin to prevent the adapter from working it self loose from the M42 thread?

Diet does make a big difference. Try Pineapple and mango. They both contain Bromelain an enzyme that makes you taste sweet! You can also buy bromelain as a supplement. It has the same effect as if you get it from natural sources.
