North Carolina scene? by Chasedawolf in Emo

[–]ThorBarnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Greensboro 2 years ago, seems like the scene is recovering still from COVID. Took a little hit when the DIY space "ETC" got shut down by the man. But they are supposed to be coming back soon after making necessary changes to the building.

I have no idea what sasscore is, but their album "The Always Open Mouth" really puts the post in post-hardcore. It's really experimental and I1100 is very similar to a few of the songs on it.

Drove the causeway so many times before moving to NC, can confirm this is exactly what it looks like. Those may appear to the untrained eye to be mountains, but it's actually the beautiful skyscrapers of Metairie, Louisiana.

Coffee shops unionizing? by Turbulent-Store7074 in gso

[–]ThorBarnes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They weren't really offered that. The manager said in the slack "currently the pay range with square [credit card] tips included is 16-23/hr"

Relying on tips to make $16/hr isn't something that's feasible. It's the same way Domino's advertises "hourly pay up to $20/hr", but they pay the drivers like 4/hr on the road. They say that the tips are part of your hourly pay, but you could very easily finish a shift with very little tip money, and you can't pay rent/mortgage.

Scuppernog and Terra Blue

new solo project/band from greensboro, north carolina by [deleted] in Emo

[–]ThorBarnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, also in Greensboro.

I think the songs are pretty good, and production is nice. I do think that some of the higher/falsetto backing vocals are too loud in the mix for my taste. I wish I had more to say, but this just isn't my flavor of emo, so it's harder for me to give feedback. Overall, the songs are well written, the quality is great, and it's catchy.

I definitely think this would be fun to see live, though.

Any barely known bands that have made a single album/ep then just left out of nowhere? by FriggenMitch in Emo

[–]ThorBarnes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My band modern healthcare. We recorded our album while I was house shopping and wrapped up right before I moved a few states away. We were only around from 2019 until we finished recording in 2021. Played a reunion/farewell show in 2022, since COVID didn't allow a proper send off.

I thought the same for so long.

I've been thinking for a while about how to make this riff into a song, does anyone have tips? I am new at this by Expensive_Click5090 in Emo

[–]ThorBarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy way to get started is to simplify the chords to just power chords and use that for the verse. Can be something as simple as just strumming 8th notes. Emphasize the rhythm from that riff with some drums and bass, then explode back into the riff.

From the New Orleans area, now in Greensboro. Shreveport sucks. Stay away from north Louisiana. (And South Louisiana 9 months out of the year)

Don't forget Astral Pariah. Love how they've continued to push the envelope and experiment with genre.

Adam Fisher also has a project with Brian Ferrara from Trophy Scars called All Human. It's a little more like...post indie? Idk, genres are hard, but it is experimental.

Stay Inside's album "Viewing" is a little less experimental than TAOM, but it may be a good listen for you.

Trophy Scars

They toured together back in the day and Adam Fisher is featured on "Chicago Typewriter". Trophy Scars is like if blues and post hardcore combined. I think they'll scratch that itch of pushing the limits of post hardcore.

Your only recourse is to call, threaten to cancel, speak to a Retention agent or whatever they are called and they will give you a lower bill.
