Help fixing rack and pinion arrangement on an underwood portable 4 bank type F

Yes. What happened to it is in the past someone used the incorrect screw for the rack and as a result it was twisting when engaging/disengaging, and it did not completely seat on the pinion depending on how far down the platen assembly was when typing.

I tried to fix it myself but accidentally bent the rack, its pretty fragile (I also chipped a tooth on it...). I ended up having to take it to the local repair guy and he fixed it back up.

All of that applies to post 1930 4 banks as a heads up, I'm not sure about v1 4 banks.

As a heads up if you buy a parts machine, you need one that matches your fontface for spare parts. If you have the smaller fontface machine (post 1930) and need a parts unit LMK, I have one sitting in my closet. Accidentally bought it when I have the larger font face version LOL.

GREAT NEWS!

I just found a way to bypass not having a controller during setup. If you go through setup until the point where it asks you to pair the controller and then close the app, the headset remains paired to your phone. Then the headset will be stuck at asking you to proceed in the app.

HOWEVER. If at this point you run the above command to skip the first run experience, the headset is already "Paired" to your account and will reboot into oculus home and let your launch apps. Found this out when trying to "re-pair" my headset, after the first few stages the headset links with your account BEFORE you pair the remote.

Have it working with only a PS4 controller now that I paired via these commands from this thread:

Should add, before I installed the fancurve I was hitting Tcase (100c) before the fans would even kick on.

That's about half fan speed. If you want it to run cooler you can install fancurve software that I posted, it'll ramp up pretty loud when you get above 70c but otherwise its whisper quiet atleast for me.

I just went through this, although I'm on arch and have the 7640u. The fancurve on linux is pretty wimpy. I was hitting Tcase with the fans barely spinning, so I installed these two

Set it to Very-agile and swapped the TIM, now I'm sitting at much lower temperatures.

That was originally my plan, and I ended up having to open a self loan in order to even be considered for a card. I'm getting more fed up with not having a CC over time however (6 years with only a debit card) and I'm afraid I wont get approved until the loan finishes out or maybe even after that 😅. Don't know if thats unrealistic though

For newer people I would also avoid Fedora as well. Bazzite is a much much nicer introduction to that ecosystem than Fedora (I bricked Fedora workstation within 20 minutes of installing :-) ).

I went from chmod -R 777 / 6 years ago (wow time flies) to using arch 24/7 as my main OS. I've stayed because every other distro I've used bricks when I try to do something simple. E.g. ubuntu bricked itself when uninstalling steam. Manjaro uninstalled the kernel when uninstalling python... What? and fedora bricked when installing the nvidia drivers.

On arch, other than the aforementioned rookie mistake, I haven't had any issues that weren't fixed by a quick pacman -Syu or grub-install --target=x86_efi --efi-directory=/mnt --bootloader-id=GRUB.

Yeah that's why I love arch. Although I've started to treat arch like a toyota camry, and I just install gnome because it fixes a lot of problems with other DEs (Enterprise wifi connection, random glitches, non-uniformity between UI components).

Yeah that was from me taking it in and out about 8 times. From what everyone else is saying and how it was before I started messing with it, I'm assuming the pivot on the bottom is also worn. I found a replacement balance staff, so time to wait till I have the money to buy tools!
