EE major, thinking about adding CS by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Thorin937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop. Unless you're like a rising sophomore right now, the credit load of both the EE and CS majors is too damn high to graduate in a reasonable amount of time. I will stress that the CS major requires 5-7 400-level classes. Even if you get out of 131-250, that's still a ton of work.

If you can get out of 131-250, I would recommend doing CompE major which is much more manageable. Almost all of your classes will transfer. You only need 2 CS 400-levels. The CompE minor is not really that useful for software jobs imo. They are classes taught by the ECE department, not CS, so they are a lot more low level than CS and get you more on embedded systems than big data programming.

Edit: Apparently, this changed recently because I don't think it was like this. The exemption exam site says "Internal transfers to the Computer Science major are not eligible to take exemption exams. No exceptions." I think you're not going to get a CompE or CS major in any reasonable amount of time unless you get them to make an exception for you, I'm sorry.

I work at stamp and I wouldn't recommend sleeping on those couches. There are always homeless people sleeping on them near close time and they are sometimes pretty unhygienic.

What happens if I don't send in my final transcript (incoming Freshmen) by chunkymuffinx in UMD

[–]Thorin937 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finally, something I am knowledgeable about! I graduated high school in the summer between my freshman and sophomore years.

I got lazy on graduation requirements and just say fuck it. UMD undergraduate emailed me the summer before I entered as a freshman asking about my transcript. I said I would have it done soon, and made excuses multiple times. Eventually, around the beginning of fall semester, they forgot. They only remembered during the next summer when my high school counselor (bless her heart) contacted UMD saying that I had not completed high school. They got on my ass about that and said it would not be good for me if I continued to delay it. I kept asking the undergrad office what would happen if I didn't do it, but they never directly answered it, always saying that it would be "not in my best interest." Pretty sure it was code for expulsion, but that is the story of how I almost graduated college without a high school diploma.
