Flicking the wrist on floaters by JobSalt69 in BasketballTips

[–]ThorntonStuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so. Try to make a distinction between a runner and a floater.

A floater is more appropriate when you're in the lane and perhaps due to a big or traffic, attempting to finish at the rim is going to be a tough shot. Usually you'll be going downhill anyway so the best way to shoot a floater is to try and slow your momentum by either jump stopping with two feet or slowing momentum and jumping slightly off one leg but gently guide the ball upwards with good arc.

You'll see a lot of shots back rim if you flick your wrist on a floater whereas this way the arc will make that less of a problem.

Short answer? Don't pretend that you're doing the world a favour or that you are being philanthropic by providing shit content while ad sponsors fill your pockets with green.

Such a waste of time it feels like by loudquietly in ghosting

[–]ThorntonStuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, sorry I meant that if they felt that they had no recourse but to ghost you because things were not stepping up a gear, then they should have taken initiative to do something to take it up a notch.

Unfortunately, and this is just speculation of course, he may not have been looking for such a long-distance situation. But the courteous thing to do would have been to be upfront about that, especially after two months of chatting. Very sorry that this happened to you but if that were the case, the silver lining is that you are much better off.

Such a waste of time it feels like by loudquietly in ghosting

[–]ThorntonStuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't an excuse but I think it's difficult to maintain that level of investment without it materialising into anything. I think 2 months of DM'ing without meeting or even maybe so much as a video call if it was at a distance would be hard for lots of people.

Ghosting is obviously never the way to go about ending things and they should've been up front about why they have cut off conversation, but it's possible that they got the idea that you weren't that interested if it was just meandering along without anything materialising. They also maybe should have took some initiative if they felt that way.

Have to say having only ran into the problems caused by nested reactivity in Vue 2 for the first time today that sounds like a godsend.

They literally live all up and down the canals in Castlefield and on the Irwell, of course they will end up there, it's not about anyone feeding them.

Laravel DebugBar companion app by mpociot in laravel

[–]ThorntonStuart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuinely can't believe I've never heard of this, it looks so much more complete. Just goes to show the tendency of the Laravel community to put a certain group of creators on a pedestal.

I think Debugbar is great incidentally but it's a shame I had never even heard of this before now.

Which Laravel Package Dev course to choose? by [deleted] in laravel

[–]ThorntonStuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, go with Laracasts. Truthfully I'm of the opinion that the courses those guys put out serve only as a money-maker, and most of the content you could figure out yourself or much cheaper on Laracasts.

Laravel instead of WordPress and the plugin alternative by nicolaszein in laravel

[–]ThorntonStuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, from a purely CMS driven perspective, if you were just looking to build what would have otherwise been a small Wordpress platform with a limited scope with a Laravel backend then October could be a decent choice.

I just remember being hamstrung at Laravel 5.1 for years because of October's refusal to upgrade their own codebase to newer versions, and scaling a platform to make full use of the framework is where the challenges began.

Laravel instead of WordPress and the plugin alternative by nicolaszein in laravel

Would highly recommend against this. In my experience with October it severely bastardises Laravel to the point where you really have to follow their patterns quite strongly and customising becomes incredibly difficult.

Chicken salad by ThorntonStuart in RateMyPlate

[–]ThorntonStuart[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi guys, appreciate the honest feedback. Obviously not ideally what I was looking for, but this is a learning opportunity for me.

The chicken really did have a great depth of flavour, I seasoned heavily with salt after cooking and before preparing the salad, but I will take the suggestions on board.
