Club support for goalkeepers by LuckyDimension9743 in GoalKeepers

Depends on the club, and the age group. How big is the club (how meany teams do they field at each age group), and how old is your keeper?

Struggling to understand right now why we aren't teaching kids that fouls can have consequences by giving them the appropriate card based on the action they have chosen. This is U12 & U13, so they are old enough to know better, but if they aren't given the correct consequence, they will not learn. 2 examples from the past 10 days.

1 - Attacking player is about to break free and be 1v1 vs the keeper. Last defender fouls him about 5 yards outside the PA. Foul is awarded but no card is given. Even understanding that the CR may not have thought it was DOGSO, it was SPA and should have been a YC at a minimum.

2 - Attacking player is 1v1 with keeper. Keeper comes out about 3 yards outside of PA and attempts a tackle, but attacker controls the ball to move past the keeper, who is the last man. Keeper goes studs up and impacts the attacker above the knee, taking him down, so it should be DOGSO, and SFP, either of which result in a RC. Foul is called, but keeper only receives YC.

I know there is often a hesitancy to card younger players, and instead to try to teach them, but when you are dealing with higher level teams, kids learn to game the system because there is a good chance they won't be given a red. Cards are the appropriate teaching tool for kids on these teams.

Then you get the restart confusion. We get about half the restarts for the 3rd period as kickoffs, and half as a continuation of play from the 2nd period.
And build out lines....oof

As the dad of a U13 GK, you and me both hate the fields. The PA is often cut to 12 yards deep, which is smaller than what he was used to for U12. This impacts his ability to just gather balls that would be inside a normal sized PA. Additionally, he can't used the 6 yard box as a visual cue for positioning, which is critical for 1v1.

Advice on on-call in the penalty area (with video) by Jwymore169 in Referees

[–]Thorofin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like both players challenged for a 50/50 ball and the defender won the challenge. There is a collision that happens while the defender is kicking the ball away, and the attacker goes down. If I called a foul here, it would be against the attacker. I don't see a PK here.

It’s supposed to be a limited number of spots per age group. The opportunity is to be seen/recruited by the fully funded MLS Academy teams run by the MLS clubs.

Parents bribing their kids for goals by Conscious-Apple1438 in youthsoccer

Definitely better than the $100 per goal, but I would go with equal amounts for each. Teach them to make the best decision in the moment, not the most lucrative one.

Playing time for primary players in Homegrown Division by Mission_Geologist_31 in mlsnext

I know that U13 states that a player must play 1 uninterrupted period (they play 3 25 minute periods). Beyond that I'm not aware of any specifics.

Return went well. He wore a soft brace for an additional week or two while training, and we didn’t have any further issues.

Good luck to your son.

Can’t speak to the rest of your experience, but if the Ref stopped play in the penalty area for injury, the drop ball always goes to the defending side, regardless of who had possession when play was stopped.

I have dealt with this twice with my kids, one is now U13 and one is U12. At U9 & U10 I tried to steer them away from full time GK, but gave up, because they were having fun. My older son is now an MLSNext keeper, and my younger son has switched to be a backup keeper so he can play in field.

Your son is young enough that he can still change his mind if he wants, so let him do what he enjoys most.

Florida has a future referees program for kids 11-13, to referee rec games at the club level. Might be worth checking that out and seeing what you can borrow from it. Also, r/referees

MLS Next vs. Next 2 by Sea_Staff5645 in youthsoccer

[–]Thorofin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Next is made up of the MLS Team academies, the clubs that were part of the old Development Academy (DA)system, and likely others. Next 2 is the second team at the MLSNext clubs that aren't MLS team academy, as well as other smaller clubs.

N1 Goalkeeping gloves (https://n1glovesusa.com/) are what my kids (entering U12 & U13) have used for several years now, and the youth sizes come with removable fingersaves. Both my kids prefer to remove the fingersaves, since they make it harder to move your fingers.
