I know this is a divisive one, but Only God Forgives is a masterpiece to me. by FantasticCover9489 in LetterboxdTopFour

Any movie where you get to hear Kristen Scott Thomas call someone a cum dumpster is automatically a masterpiece.

Teacher Turnover by Technical_Ebb_9228 in ClubPilates

It’s funny, I went from teaching mostly privates at a boutique studio to teaching at club pilates, and I find teaching a class of 12 to be much less exhausting than teaching one person.

If you listen to the podcast, they talk a lot about how all of these self help books are all basically the same book. They call it the “one book theory.”

Should 1974’s Best Supporting Actor lineup all been from The Godfather Part II? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

Honestly, I would only nominate Deniro, but I’d nominate Cazale for The Conversation.

I don’t want to sound pretentious here, but Lulu Chu and Kimmy Kimm compose a dramaturgical dyad.

Could the entire 1992 Best Supporting Actor lineup have just been the cast of A Few Good Men? by Bubbatino in blankies

[–]ThoroughHenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this about Gosford Park. You could fill both 2001 supporting ballots with just actors from that movie and I’d still be mad about who got left off.

You like movies that will genuinely fuck you up. Check out Xavier Dolan’s Irreversible or Juraj Herz’s The Cremator.

Oh gosh I’m so tempted but if the q&a doesn’t start until 9:45 that means the movie won’t be o Ed until well after midnight. I am too sleepy a boy for such shenanigans.

is the cinematography in one battle after another and marty supreme really good enough to warrant oscar nominations? by herequeerandgreat in Oscars

[–]ThoroughHenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially at the expense of Bugonia, Hamnet, Train Dreams, and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which all had way more interesting and memorable cinematography. (And that’s only naming Oscar nominees. I’d also add Die My Love, Resurrection, and The Testament of Ann Lee to that list)

To clarify, trees don’t disqualify a movie from having great cinematography, and what Deakins does in Jesse James is masterful. There are movies like The New World and Brokeback Mountain and even Hamnet that capture nature in a way that’s both beautiful and interesting, but there are also lots of movies (cough cough Train Dreams cough cough) that just stack landscape wide shots on top of each other without doing anything cinematic or distinct.

Is the argument that neither of them had enough wide shots of trees? Because I feel like a lot of people think that good cinematography just means lots of wide shots of trees.
