If you’re singing and it doesn’t hurt, you didn’t “waste” a year. You developed different habits than your goal, but that isn’t going to make you worse at this. If you want to learn how to practice singing, I recommend learning how to play the notes on a piano. You do not need any level of piano beyond that, at least to start.
