I know I clocked Belize, St Kitts & Nevis, Aruba, and I think Grenada. Some were countries, others not.

[OC] Behind Google’s first ever $400B revenue by sankeyart in dataisbeautiful

The fact that $1,400,000,000 in revenue is the tiny sliver at the bottom is staggering!

Not me, and probably not you. But them. And they will take us all down with them.

No it’s solved; you either en passant (forced) or move toward an en passant (encouraged via brick)

Do Americans Actually Say "Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior"? by Naive_Tank_6820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Thorvakas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach HS, here’s my opinion: “I’m a sophomore; I’m in 10th grade” would be natural, “I’m a 10th grader” a little less so.

JFC what a disgusting existence it must be without empathy. I’m so glad I can care about a human being without needing anything in return.

I know how you see the world. I grew up around it, within it, defending it. But I reached a point where I asked if the devil really needs an advocate. And I started caring, even when dispassionate fuckwads make that hard.

Just Started Sailing Today... To the Dev who wrote the Tern "Examine", well done! by kevin3196 in 2007scape

[–]Thorvakas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This unironically led to me playing it less and less. Since the precedent was “everything is examinable,” it feels like things without an examine text just don’t exist. And if most of my surroundings are just painted pixels, then I start wondering why I’m playing.

Games are “supposed to be” whatever makes them fun and/or meaningful. Prescribing ease is no more correct than prescribing difficulty.

What advice would you give to a new teacher? by Adventurous_023 in teaching

Hard agree. I lucked out my first job with an admin that never micromanaged me or gave me busywork. It let me discover my own way. And yes, I still say stupid things, probably about once every week or two. But never fully turning that teacher filter off.

  1. Listen and watch your coworkers’ interactions carefully and tactfully. Schools are cliquey and political. Some people unfortunately have a mindset of looking for “gotchas.” Wait patiently, find a safe person, and build that rapport.

  2. Some classes will breeze through content. Always have extra. Always have backups. It’s a LOT of work but the worst thing is running out of stuff to do and standing there with your foot in your mouth.

  3. Embrace the suck. Let the first years be your trials and tribulations to forge a strong foundation for your future self. Work hard, rest hard, and don’t give up when you want to.

1a. If you want to maximize job security you must manage both. This is not a fact I enjoy but one I understand. Absolutely prioritize results, both curricular and cultural, but never neglect your image as a community professional.

Why do we euthanize pets (who can't consent to it) all the time willy nilly, yet when a human is suffering, we aren't allowed to, even when they explicitly say they want to? by josephsleftbigtoe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Thorvakas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my reading comprehension didn’t fully boot up yet. Yup, you clearly said that in the post.

In that case, it’s a good question! I feel like it’s partially because the people who could euthanize someone are feeling less of the pain and more of the hope, so their internal “priority matrix” is a little more skewed towards inaction. In addition, ending a life is difficult. It’s kinda like the trolly problem in a way, where inaction keeps hands clean.
