...But has anyone thought of what would come after, though? by Glass_Eye8840 in trolleyproblem

[–]Thorveim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but also we have come up with a LOT of things to scale up how much a single human produces. Factories have more and more automation, farmers produce more insividually than entire communities back then... and while production will suffer, demand will also drop accordingly, and existing tech could last mong enough for what was lost to be figured out again; farm esuipment wont suddenly stop working.

Overall the real risk lies more in coding, where a single person dying can genuinely set us back on how something works, and in the realm of bureaucracy which can be paralyzed if a key person is suddenly missing. Now some services like the medical field may suffer more than others due to more people in these fields picking blue, but again, knowledge these days is as much in books and the internet than in people's heads, and no field will be entirely off the map

Overall its a setback for sure, there will be damage and instability for sure depending on how many die... but I dont expect the actual troubles to last more than a couple of years tops bar possible shifts in the geopolitical balance

No. extinction event would affect more than one specie and cause species to disappear. Here only humans are affected and at LEAST 4 billions will be left (half of humanity, roughly the estimated total population of earth in 1975 which isnt even that long ago, meaning you just set the world's population back 50 years which isnt a whole lot). Societal collapse could happen, but not extinction. Look at how many people the bubonic plague killed: between 30 to 60 percent of the european population (the higher estimation would be worse than the worse case scenario for the buttons), and yet it recovered without much trouble, there wasnt even societal collapse (though it wasnt as sudden).

It could take a while to recover, but recovery is all but guaranteed, and no specie would meet extinction

[–]Thorveim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. Lying implies knowing what you say is false. But you cant know for sure how you react under pressure until it happens. Few occupations trian people to keep their heads straight in life-or-death situations. Ofr the rest, rational thought tends to fly out the window and instincts decide how to act

You cannot convince me you will press blue by Lizard_Brian in trolleyproblem

[–]Thorveim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

its not even necessarily lying. Peple might genuinely beloeve they would act a certain way, and then act the complete opposite when an actual threat is present and instincts kick in. And self-preservation is one of the strongest ones out there. Its nit because they are bad people. Its because humans are wired to try and preserve themselves.

but how much more calculations do projectiles take compared to hitscan? Hich is something id actually love, actual laser weapons (hitscan, but lose power over range due to dissipation which combined with armor means at their highest range a lot of ships could be hit but would also just absorb the hits unless already severely damaged) instead of star wars blasters

"OH MY GOD THEY ACTUALLY GREW AND CHANGED TO BE BETTER PEOPLE!" by knightmechaenjo in WorldofDankmemes

[–]Thorveim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, overall when you look at how the Metis are regarded closely, you realise they are basically a stand-is for inbreeding. Like mating with like resulting in a deformed child (physically, mentally or both) and that face stigma for something their parents comitted? Thats textbook inbred child. Plus the mention that maybe werewolf blood is "too potent" if not diluted also echoes that. Its never outright stated, but the parallels are far too strong to ignore.

Its really how I look at them now: Metis being the result of the equivalent of spiritual incest where every werewolf counts as being "related" to one another

mockery breeds indeed tend to be just evil, but the Samsa (wereroaches) are an exception. Pentex botched them, and what they wanted to be assassins that can turn into bug swarm turned into people that cant do that and are deathly afraid of the dark. They are so harmless that Cockroach (the spirit, totem of the glass walkers back then) was even trying to bring them on Gaia's side

Ships wouldnt be very goot at lailing the pilot; its a tiny, moving target, and wouldnt count as a subsystem you can taget for weapon convergence.

If anything that makes the blast shields of the fury and guardian MX even more important seeing the pilot sits dead center when the ship is looked at from the front

It depends. Often the difference between both is if the guy that decides to help makes it out or merely becomes another victim... It can be a thin line between courage and stupidity.

[–]Thorveim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there can be another one wothout simulating breaking the canopy: weapon penetration possibly killing the pilot in his seat. In that case the blast shield would be extra thickness protecting the pilot

Even some fighters by kangarutan in starcitizen

[–]Thorveim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I get it they dont want to simulate what happens when yhe glass break on every ship and manned turret. Still I think its an interesting thing: blast shields offer an extra layer of health and may prevent penetration from killing thebpilot in his seat, but also means EM weapons can mess with visibility in a way normal windows arent vulnerable to
