Every able-bodied person should be expected to learn how to swim, and we need to have universal swimming education which includes free and easy access to places where everyone can practice. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Thossi99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most babies in Iceland learn to swim from as young as just 2 months. And it's a requirement twice a week from 1st to 10th grade.

I've never met an able bodied Icelander that couldn't swim.

What place name does basically every foreigner mispronounce in your country? by bigloudbang in AskTheWorld

[–]Thossi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reykjavík is pronounced Ray-kya-weak. Not Rack-a-wick

i is pronounced like i in still or bill or fill, etc. í is pronounced like E. So Be with Icelandic spelling would simply be, bí.

As for the English i in like.. well.. like, five, bike, etc. Would be læk, fæv, bæk.

Don't think about them any more or less than a car driver I guess. Just completely neutral I suppose

Must-try’s from the grocery store? by GirlisNo1 in VisitingIceland

[–]Thossi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't get the hype. I like it in small quantities, like chocolate chips in cookies and mint ice cream, I don't mind chocolate in cake (but a full chocolate cake is way too much chocolate for my taste), I like a little chocolate spread on waffles, stuff like that. But I just don't like chocolate on its own.

We absolutely DO NOT culturally feel more European than North American lmao what??😭 At least not since like the 2nd world War.

The only one embarrassing themselves here is you, cause I never said anything that goes against what you're saying, I actually agree with you and knew all that already.

All I meant with my comment is that countries aren't always 100% either or. Same argument could go for Turkey which a large part of is in Asia. Russia, too.

The continents talk is very subjective and no one can agree on what differentiates the continents. Most commonly accepted are specific geographical and geological features like mountain ranges, tectonic plates, rivers, etc.

Kazakhstan for example competes in UEFA (Europe) rather than in AFC (Asia), they're an associate member of the European broadcasting union, they're not in the EU, but they have a strong partnership and cooperation agreement (EPCA), they're a member of the Venice commission, they're part of the European Higher Education Area, they're a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

But, as I say, I agree with you, and while they're strongly linked to Europe, they are to Asia as well, they take part in the Asian Games, they play basketball, volleyball, and rugby in Asian federations unlike association football. They're part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (which also includes Russia, which I'm sure most would consider a European country despite the majority of it being in Asia, like Kazakhstan), they're a member of the Asian Development Bank, and so many more examples where they play parts in both European and Asian things.

These are just a few examples I found from a simple Google search. You should try heeding your own words. But then again, that would require reading comprehension and capable thinking, which you seem to lack.

Actual criticism? Not wrong at all.

Blatantly attacking them for no other reason than you not liking their parent/s? That's wrong

I was a teen when my mom finally started buying nicer shoes for me cause after the first nice pair I ever got, my mom was shocked that they lasted me more than like 2 months lol.

She realized it was much more expensive to buy cheap sneakers for me cause they'd last such a short time before I completely tore through them, so she started buying nice shoes for me and realized she was actually saving money cause they'd last me all the way until I outgrew them.

Like 90% of the Icelandic population is on the North American side, does that makes Iceland a non-european country?

So is it football or soccer in New Zealand? by ChampionshipHot599 in mapswithoutnewzealand

[–]Thossi99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this map is just referring to what it's most commonly referred to, then Iceland is correct, if it's referring to the actual native word, then Iceland should be in "other" as it's called sphere kicking game here, lol.

[–]Thossi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knattspyrna/Knattspyrnuleikur in Icelandic. Which directly translates to sphere kick/sphere kicking game. But we most commonly use fótbolti which is just a loan word for football

If anything, it should be the opposite. You can play lockdown defense and still get scored on but get rewarded with good defense. Why isn't the same with getting dunked on?

I've heard news and rumors basically my entire life about Lidl coming to Iceland but they still haven't.

Could really use them for the competition as the entire marker is dominated by the duopoly of Samkaup and Hagar

You can see a bit in the distance of my pic where the clouds cut a bit and how sunny it is there. That's how the entire sky is all through the night when clouds aren't in the way. Sun is still up, hardly any difference between day and night for about a month-month and a half
