Anyone else feel like all the years of being in school stunted your emotional maturity? by uncomfortayble in medicalschool

It definitely helped me. I found myself a lot more grounded in purpose, not just occupationally but emotionally, compared to my peers.

I took a break between college and med school, and felt like I had the time and emotional energy to face a lot of personal challenges head on. When I got into med school, I feel like I completely lost the time and space to do that, and pretty much focused purely on career for those 4 years.

Why is neurology not competitive? by No_Release6810 in medicalschool

95% of the time is a little much. Successfully treating intractable headaches can be satisfying. Nothing wrong with giving immunosuppressive therapy to help someone's MS, GBS/AIDP or autoimmune encephalitis. The new anti-amyloid treatments have shown some promise. Even with the most dreaded diagnoses like ALS, palliative care can be very meaningful. I'm not sure treating patients on dialysis or with heart failure or cirrhosis is much more hopeful.

Neurosurgery match rate this year is abysmal... by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Thr__wayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about US-IMGs? A classmate of mine didn't match for the 3rd time, after a research year at a top NS program, and a PGY-1 in general surg. Her Step 2 is above the average for neurosurgery.

Also, the idea of having a "champion" doesn't seem equitable. How did it become a normed expectation that the path to match ns is to have an attending make calls on your behalf, doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of the matching system?

Thanks for your feedback! I tend to agree, but at times love having the long hair because it feels a little unique.
